Is the U.S. government endangering online poker?

I'm worried the U.S government will succeed at shutting down online poker in the U.S. What legislation has been proposed? Why? Can anyone comment on whether they think this will happen and when? or are we in no danger of the U.S. gov shutting down online poker..I hope.

That's not good, I couldn't get to the link at work due to firewall, but I'll check it out later.

Sal,

The link is from a discussion 5 years ago concerning the same topic. And there hasn't been any serious threat in the intervening 5 years.

So take the 'any day now' text as sarcasm.

Isnt foxwoods or some other U.S. based casino challenging this by offering a modified online casino.

Which is a good and necessary thing. You need to get such a thing shut down in order to challenge it in court. Without a court challenge, and absent any specific legislation by Congress or the various states, the Justice Department's opinion that online gambling is illegal has nothing more to it than my opinion that Shana Hiatt has a nice ass.

The wire act doesn't specifically say anything about internet poker. The Justice department thinks it should cover internet poker. Other people disagree. The only way to get that resolved is to go in front of a judge. To do that you need government action against online gambling.

There was a ruling in 2001. The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana specifically held that the Wire Act does not apply to Internet gambling, other than sports wagering. That was upheld by a Circuit Court of Appeals.

Not that it stopped the Justice Department.
