How to check if a website is legitimate? (O/T)
 

Is there some kind of watchguard site where I can check if a website is legitimate or not? For instance, when trying to book a hotel, I found a booking agency (cybevasion.com) that *looks* legitimate, but since I've never heard of them before, and only get one hit at Google (and none linking to them), I'm not sure if they are safe or not.

Anyway to find out (before I go ahead)?

Just stick to the the big name companies. You don't want to show up in Vegas and find out your hotelroom was never booked because you thought saving 25 dollars a night was worth it by booking with a never-before-heard company.

This alone would raise major redflags for me.

Before I do business with a new company on the web, I always check their "about us" info to confirm that they list a physical adress and that they have a way to contact them by phone. I'll often call with some silly technical question also just to feel them out before buying.

actually, there are about 1200 links to them but that doesn't neccessarily mean I'd do business with them. I would click through some of those pages myself to see what others are saying.

Strange. Perhaps I just found a bug in Google. When clicking "Advanced search" and writing "cybevasion.com" in the Link field, I get a search for "link:cybevasion.com", with 2 hits. If I manually change that to "link: cybevasion.com" (insert space after ":"), I get a 600+ hits.

just pm me your credit card number, social security number, and mother's maiden name along with the site you want verified and I will take care of it for you.

bbbonline has a database of companies (mainly US companies) which you can check up on.

However, cybevasion looks like a french company. So, I doubt bbbonline has it in its database. I'm just throwing the link out there in case you're looking at any other companies.

BBB is a joke. Paid members get good reviews, nonpaid members get no review. If you call and ask about a company thats not a member, they'll say "sorry, we don't know anything about them."

Then they'll turn around and call that company saying "we've been getting calls inquiring about your company, why don't you join the club so we can tell them what a great company you are."

The proper way is to use the www. When you search for link:cybevasion.com it only gets those sites that link to the non www site.

Try link:www.cybevasion.com

But anyway, google is a poor indicator of links as they don't report all backlinks to a site, use MSN.
