How safe are you behind a router?

Is a software firewall needed still since you have pretty much everything locked down? I am thinking this answer is no.

Now here is the big questions. If I have say a keylogger inbedded in my system can people still get screen shots and keylogs when I am behind a router?

A router doesn't protect you from anything unless it's a router with a built-in firewall. Even with a hardware firewall, it's a good idea to have a software firewall as well.

Not quite understanding what you mean when you say you have an inbedded keylogger. I will this, a software firewall will be able to stop malicious program from sending out your sensitive info once it gets on your machine. Even with both sw and hw firewalls stuff can still get on your machine through emails and downloads.

A software firewall (eg ZoneAlarm etc) can tell you which applications are trying to access the internet, while a separate hardware firewall cannot. This covers the exact situation you mention, where a rogue program running on your PC is trying to send information to the outside world.
