Foxwoods NL Rake. oh my...
 

As far as I know foxwoods charges you by the hour to play NL. For 1-2 it's $10 an hour. Is this true? That's a lot of money for a $100 max buyin.

By the way I'll be making my first trip down there tomorrow morning and wanted to play NL, but that hourly charge may push me in to limit.

That’s not really that bad for 100 max NL. 5 a half hour is about what you pay in rake anywhere for 100 max, and this is the most beatable 100 max NL in the country your referring too. (From what other people have said, I haven't played enough places outside the east coast to make a claim like that on my own, but it‘s definitely soft)

You may be playing $10 in rake in a lot of 1/2 NL or 5/10 limit games. You can bring a maximum of $100 to the table, but that doesn't mean that a lot of stacks are a lot larger than $100.

$10 rake -- $80-$100 per hour for the casino.

If you assume a $4 max rake at a 1/2 game, it's something like 22-27 hands an hour to get the same income for the casino. So it sounds like pretty much a push from the Casino's point of view

Of course, loose players pay more of the rake than tight players .....

In any event, the Foxwoods $100 NL looks profitable even with the time charge (though I've only played it a couple of times, so take this with a grain of salt).

There was a point last night where we weren't getting anywhere close to this. I couldn't believe the slow pace of the game. Every hand the dealer was making change for someone buying in (Go to the freakin' cage!) or taking a quick nap before dealing the next hand. A couple of us complained to the floor who said "she's doing fine...". It really pissed me off that the dealer didn't care and wasn't paying attention to the game at all. It felt as though the players were running the game as opposed to the dealer.

BTW - The time charge isn't that bad when you doing well, but if you aren't getting cards it hurts. There have been mixed rulings as to whether you can pay out of pocket or not, but I've always found you can.

Thanks guys. My friend just backed out and I'm not sure I want to go by myself, so it might be a while before I see it for myself.

As mentioned above, that is the problem with the time charge COMBINED with the fact that the dealers aren't keeping their own tokes: not enough hands per hour! I'm not going to argue for/against time collection vs rake...EXCEPT for at Foxwoods, where I believe time collection is a huge ripoff with the lack of dealer speed/interest. At a place like MGM, where I'm working, I can get 18-20 hands out per half hour with the auto-shufflers, and I'm not that great of a dealer. Tell me you wouldn't prefer time collection, tight player or not, with 35 or more being seen every hour...

anyone who thinks $10 at the 1/2 there isnt ridiculous is insane. There is zero chance you will ever play 30 hands/hour, 100% chance the floor comes up with a rule that contradicts a rule from last time you were there, and 100% chance there is some sort of screw up by a dealer/player that causes a 15 argument and ALWAYS ends just in time for time collection. Great game they spread.

I am not in any way disagreeing with your points, because they seem right on, but:

Yet they still have huge interest in the game, with more binky NL tables every time I go, and more names on the list.

The problem isn't necessarily Foxwoods. The problem is that NL is so trendy, and everyone wants so badly to do what's trendy that they're willing to pay insane rates to do so.

If you don't like it, play limit or go elsewhere. In other words, don't reward them for their reacting to the market.

(I for one will be delighted when this NLHE fad fades and poker becomes about playing poker again, rather than about appearances.)
