I would check given that you have no reads on MP2, and he probably has a weak A in my opinion, or maybe he is planning on check raising the flush, putting you on a strong hand. in 2/4 I notice this especially that players love to set up a check raise on the river, particularly heads up.

I don't see much benefit to betting. Most likely he was calling along with either an ace, a flush draw, or something like middle pair. Two of these three beat you.

You'll miss a bet the few times calls the river with a weaker pair, but I don't think this offsets the times he checkraises with his flush or even a crazy rivered two pair.

Unless villian is a complete idiot I think checking behind and taking the free showdown is the best play most of the time.
