I told my dad I won $200 in a MTT today, and he yelled at me.

My dad has this vision in his head that I'm on a downward spiral gambling and that I'll prettymuch throw away everything I have and be a bum.

He feels I don't focus enough on my education (last semester was my best in college--3.2 QPA).

He also yells at me saying there is no way I could make a living playing poker (I never said I could).

How do you get through to your parents? It seems no matter what stats I show him or how I explain it I'm always just a casino gambler pulling the slot down and dropping quarters down the toilet.

By no means am I a great player (I'm just starting 2/4 limit at Party) but I can easily make $1,000 a month playing part time.

This is really beginning to be a thorn in my side.

Help!

PS I find myself browsing this forum far too often nowadays. I really, really enjoy the thoughtful posts I come across. Thanks.

Why did you tell your dad you play online? minus well tell him you drank a 6 pack of beer before taking the car out... stole a copy of the econ 101 final with your buddy...and had sex with your girlfriend on his bed!

Your daddy is a paladin. Always believing that he is right, and never wavering from his beliefs. Maybe if you explain the mathematics behind the game he might be convinced it is not pure gambling and that you have a long term advantage?

Most people have hobbies that cost them money (astronomy, model rockets, trains...) but yours makes you money. Shouldn't he be happy for you?

Realize that he thinks I'm running on luck. Even with all the stats I show him on Poker Tracker (he is appalled I spent money on this), he still believes that I will be "sucked in" and will lose it all (BR is about $1k right now, but I've taken out $1k also).

I'm just having a really hard time getting through to him.

He does, however, like the sound of bonus whoring and doesn't seem to mind when I tell him I'm doing several bonuses for free money.

Okay I'm confused.. you say that you can easily make 1k a month playing poker but that you have a 1k bankroll and have taken out another 1k...I would ask...How long have you been playing, 2 months? It seems that you are no where near the amount of play needed to understand your true earnings...not that poker is a bad "hobby" just that I can understand your dad, in that for every person out there making money at this game there must be a fish giving it to him...just from your two statements I think your game needs a lot of work in order to be sure that you are not just "running good"

other than that if your dad don't pay the bills tell him to shove it. and if he does than make enough money playing poker so you can tell him to shove it!

if you can't do either of these than your dad is right

the problem is clearly that your dad is so used to you being straight edge that he can't handle it when you do something so unbecomming of a young upstanding christian

Have you made back (and cashed out) your initial bankroll yet? If so, the next time you talk to him about this, frame it as a freeroll situation. If the initial investment is back in your bank account, the worst that can happen is that you'll end up right back where you started.

Otherwise, don't get ahead of yourself limit-wise, be realistic about how developed your game is, and keep more than enough in the BR to cover the downswings. And for god's sake, go to class, pay attention, and contribute. Be intellectually curious and engaged away from poker and your dad will have nothing to complain about.

My initial investment is ten dollars, and I've been playing a good while. I mean, I haven't wanted to cash out the $1,000, but I've had some emergencies come up that poker has bailed me out of.

My game is very solid, and I use these forums every day to improve it further.

I doubt I'm running good after 90,000 hands or so...
