is 5 1/2 feet too small for a \"real\" table?
 
i found a really nicely constructed table on ebay at a good price....but apparently its only 66 inches long (5.5 feet)....what do you guys think?

It depends on how many people you usually play with. If you play with a smaller number of people this would be a nice table. It is a pain to play on a full size table short handed.

66x48 inches should seat 8 people nice and roomy. 9 would be tight and 10 would need narrow chairs (shoulder to shoulder).

I have a table thats oval 6' long and it is much better than a full size table of you don't have a professional dealer. Highly recommended.
