To do everything touristy, stay in the Union Square area. There are a million hotels, you're around all the shopping, right next to Chinatown, the cable cars to Fisherman's Wharf, and centrally located for anything else.

The Hotel Monaco is a nice boutique hotel about three blocks from there -- I highly recommend it.

Union Square is definitely a good touristy area, however, if you stay around there shell out the money for a decently priced place because there are a lot of real shitholes over there. places that rent by the hour, etc.

also, there is a holiday inn on Columbus Avenue very near Fisherman's Wharf and Ghiradeli Square that is clean and has a great location.
