Covering your tracks
 

I'm a big enough man to admit when I have a problem. I'm a bonus whore. I bought yet another PC just so I could open a few more accounts. Ethically, I'm OK with it. If you have a problem with it save your breath.

What I need is a little tech help. I have networked DSL for two of the PCs. There is a number assigned to each internet connection and I believe the DSL modem gets a new one each time it's reset. Is this true? I wish to avoid logging on to the same site with the same number and different accounts. Your ideas please.

You can always check your IP address with ipconfig run from the command prompt.

Why not use different connection methods?

One PC via cable, one via DSL. The extra bonuses would cover the extra cost, and if one goes down you can still play on the other.

If you get caught, you are screwed.

No judgement here. The number is the IP address. It probably depends on your provider but unless you pay extra the IP is floating. Fixed IP addresses are avaialble (I have one). If yours is floating it will certainly change when you restart your "modem" and I believe will also change from time to time at the whim of the ISP.

I would be very surprised if the sites don't also track the MAC address on your modem. There is a unique MAC address associated with every modem (DSL, Cable, Dial-Up, etc.)

My experince has been that DSL and Cable modems are set up in bridging mode, which means they don't have a Public IP address. Depending on how you have it set up.

Goto www.whatismyip.com on both computers, if they are both the same, they you have a problem.

To get a different IP you can try reseting the modem and then the router, but usually most ISP's will give you the same IP back.

To get around this, directly connect the other computer do the DSL modem, reset the DSL modem and reboot the other computer, then check it again on www.whatismyip.com

It really all depends on how your ISP does things and if you have a router.

PS: unless your DSL modem is setup to be a router as well, it's MAC address won't make it onto the internet.

not quite, each of your computers with have an network card with a unique ID, your ISP will store that so you only get 1 IP address per computer.

just remember to check on the website I listed to make sure it is different.
