mid pair one off the button.

i was wondering what the correct move would be in a loose-aggressive 20-40 game if i held fours to eights one off the button and there were no limpers. should i raise and try to steal the blinds or see a flop?

I really don't like a limp there, I think it's a raise or fold situation.

Depending how aggressive the game is playing and how likely the button is to 3-bet you I might consider folding some of the smaller pairs 22-44, but with 55-88 it's an auto raise for me.

If you have any chance of stealing the blinds I say "raise it up!"

Definately don't limp. I'd raise most of the time in that situation and hope to take the blinds.

You can never open limp from the cut off

I agree. Raise or fold, 100% of the time.

You are the favorite to have the best hand, so I would not call that stealing.

You should raise, if you are not comfortable doing so you should not be in the game.

It's interesting. Myself and another small stakes poster criticized lighterjobs for asking this question in the small stakes forum and you all state the obvious answer. Wouldn't this question be better answered with a question, "Why are you playing 20-40 if you don't know how to answer this question yourself."
What do I know though, I'm just a small stakes player.

maybe i just moved up limits too fast because 10-20 is so loose that i would just see a flop in the cutoff with fours to eights. thanks for your help, i'll know what to do next time.

i should add that i have the br for 20-40, so i'm not playing with scared chips, but i'm not really comfortable with that limit yet. but in the casino where i play it only goes from 10-20 to 20-40. maybe i should just stick with 10-20 a little longer.

88 is an auto raise whoever the blinds are.

44 is kinda different for me.

If the button/blinds are tight, I raise. If they are aggressive, I fold. my cutoff is about 66 though I'm not sure why. If the blinds are loose weak I still raise 44 and either hope to flop a set or flop a scary board.
