2. Working on a poker book that'll break down his game.

3. Talks shop with Howard Lederer.

4. First poker book was Hold'em Poker by Sklansky.

For some reasons, lots of people seem to hate the guy... he sounds like a clever guy to me though... and has impressive results indeed!

Agreed! He is smarter than people give him credit for. Besides that he is down to earth, and a very nice guy.

It's fair enough that people do not like his style and prefer others players. But when I see people get really nasty towards him, I start disliking internetforums. Because usually they wont say it to his face. I have even heard online qualifiers / amateurs and such claiming that he is a below-average player, who gets lucky occasionnaly. I sure can't argue with his success. Just because he doesn't play exactly the way your favorite book says to play, and just because you can't understand the logic behind his play doesn't mean there isn't any. I mean, he does seem to know what he's doing.

I just love the guy.

And he is kinda sexy, too.

I am definitely more aggressive than most players, but I also have a different philosophy about my game. My outlook is a little more from a mathematical perspective. Other players rely too much on their instincts and reading abilities. Sometimes they allow that to overshadow the mathematical truth. Usually, I let the math do its thing. Sometimes, people put too much into their reads, and ante off all of their chips and then suddenly have no chips at all.

This sounds just like Sklansky's comments on Gus.

EDIT: The timing of this article is a little curious, since Gus hasn't done anything lately that we know of. Maybe he won the PSI finals which will be shown on Sunday?

He probably still is one of the best backgammon players in the world..:).

People who play backgammon better than I do (and I'm not bad), vouch that Gus is the real deal when it comes to high stakes backgammon.

He has a lot of skill, and a lot of nerve. Any number of his detractors have neither.

I seem to remember him making a somewhat disparaging remark about Sklansky's books sometime last year. That might explain it.
