Deanrover?

I don't really have a clue how to play Stud 8, was just fooling around.

Is this a call, raise or fold, and how close it is.

FWIW I folded as I have no clue how to play.

Fold, the hand is not really playable in most circumstances. It is hurt more in this situation having an A, a 4, and three diamonds out. As well as being 2nd in after the bring in on 3rd.

I think this is a call. It's fairly likely that you have the best three-card low, you have an Ace, and although a couple of cards are out, you have other vague possibilities as well. Also, the game was not at all aggressive, so it was pretty likely that you'd be able to see fourth street for only the fifty cents.

Did you see my royal? My first-ever royal playing any stud game, and I time out after fourth street. My opponent had 2c 3h 7c 7d Ts Th As, so I don't think I cost myself much, but yeesh.

My thinking has been swayed a lot by O8. There, you generally want to play a hand that has scoop potential, and a hand that can make "the nuts". However, given the 3 cd starting hand, and no community cards of 7CS, should these assumptions be relaxed.

Should you be willing to play and hand that is in the top 50 per cent of hands you would play in Stud Hi, or Razz. And also play hands that have decent 2 way possibilities.

Anyway, I suspected I should have played this, but due to my bad post 3rd street skills, decided to fold.

question for Andy

Just out of curiosity, why were you playing in this game? Surely you could beat any stud 8 game on-line.

Re: question for Andy

I was playing as I had a friend at the table and new he would find it funny.

This hand does have some two-way possibilities, as a pair of Aces or Aces-up can win, especially in a short-handed pot.

If you're going to play this game at all, read Ray Zee's book before you bug us too much. No, you can't just take the top 50% from the other games. There are a lot of hands that are good in high-only stud like middling pairs and high-ish three-flushes that are less-than-playable in stud/8. 732 is a pretty good starting hand in razz, but it's much weaker in stud/8. I would guess that A92 would be playable most of the time in razz, but it's obviously unplayable in stud/8.

It's not like you gave up gobs of EV by folding this hand, but if you can't play a hand like this, you can't play this game.
