Detroit questions

I've done some searching on the Detroit card rooms and have come up with the following information. If anything is incorrect or if anyone has anything to add, I would appreciate the input.

Someone referenced three casinos with cardrooms in Detroit, but I really only found discussion on two of them.
Greektown and Motor City Casino (MCC)

Greektown - Spreads 3/6 games on weekends, but has very long wait times associated with them. Has a reputation for having rude floor people and dealers. Is a smoking card room.

MCC - Lowest game is 5/10 on weekends. Has long waits also, but not as long as Greektown. They also allow you to call in up to an hour in advance to put your name on the wait list. Their cardroom is non-smoking. Their rake rate is $1 higher per hand than Greektown.

People say that just because the 3/6 game isnt there on weekends, the 3/6 players are. So the 5/10 game at MCC is very soft and easy to beat.

MGM Grand in Detroit does not have a poker room. Casino Windsor across the way is rumored to be opening a poker room sometime soon.

Correct, except the rudeness is more attributable to the floor staff than the dealers. The dealers are mostly decent folks.

Also correct. The floor staff there are much nicer. Also, they haven't been dealing $3-6 during the week either.

Actually, I would say that it borders on insane. You just can't get people off of a hand. It's not far from people playing for play chips online.

Because the players at $5-10 are so erratic, it's very difficult to get a consistent result. I moved up to $10-20 shortly after they dropped the $3-6 game and I've been very happy. The rake has less of an impact and the percentage of regulars at the table is higher. If you have the bankroll and plan on playing there regularly, I'd recommend sticking with $10-20.

Speaking of the Detroit casinos, what are the no-limit games like there? I'll be in the area over the holidays visiting family and I'm hoping to get away from said family at least once or twice for some poker.

I don't play the NL game at MCC, so I really can't tell you what the game is like. I can tell you that a lot of the same players also play $10-20, esp. after they got blasted and need to rebuild.

I do know that it has blinds of $5-10 and a minimum buy in of $100, but you really need $1-2K to be able to play.

If you're a hockey fan, you might want to be aware that Darren McCarty plays NL at MCC fairly frequently, esp. since the season is scrapped due to the ongoing disputes.

Someone else will need to speak to Greektown since I generally don't play there.

Avoid Greektown if smoking really bothers you. You can call in an hour in advance to get waitlisted, but there is essentially no waiting area once you are there. It is very disorganized and chaotic at times waiting to get a seat. Otherwise it is a much bigger room than MCC.

Thanks for the info-- is there a cap on the 5/10 blinds NL game? $100 is ridiculously short for a game with those blinds. I've never seen a 10xBB minimum buyin before...

Re: Detroit questions

ive palyed in that game once and there is no cap on the buy-in. i think the biggest stack when i played was a bout 2.5k, but ive heard the game is usually mucg bigger.

only half the greeektown room is smoke free, the side where they spread the games >5-10 he and 5-20 stud, mainly becasue there is a bar on the side of the room.

the otehr section is smoke free, the ususally spread 10-20, 15-30, 20-40 possibly round by round and the nl games.

i havent been there in a couple months so im not 100% these are still the situations.

you can call into greektown an hour in advance also, it does help. you still might ahve to wait though.

good luck

Re: Detroit questions

The minimum buy in is $100, but there is no maximum buy in. You can plop down $25K on the table and go all in on every hand if you're of a mind to do so. According to the regular NL players that I've chatted with, $2K is what you should bring if you don't want people taking shots at you based on your chip stack.

The rake is 10% up to $6, plus $1 for the Bad Bead Jackpot at MCC. At Greektown, the rake is a maximum of $5, plus $1 for the BBJ. This is regardless of the stakes of the game.
