The reason Fantasy Football sucks

This is assuming all leagues run like the one im in. Its my first year so maybe most are different but i wouldnt know.

Playoffs run from the last two weeks of the regular season. I understand why they cant use real playoffs, but the whole system is messed. The problem is that during the most important time for us fantasy football players many of our studs may get rested for the playoffs.

Im thinking fantasy football should work just on record alone. To keep teams interested right through the end simply make the pay structure so that last place pays more than second to last to the eventual winner. It also makes each week feel more valuable.

every league i've ever played in has had the championship game week 16. This pretty much solves all problems.

Not even close. The Colts can choose to rest or not playing full time their starters right now. They've clinched everything that needs to be clinched.

The ironic thing that the OP is trying to make the best team win, yet he wanted the champion decided upon record. Why not have the champion decided upon points then? In both of my leagues this year, I was in the top 3 out of 10 in points, but I didn't make the playoffs in either (top 4). A system that truly rewards the best team would be to give the championship to the team with the most points. That of course would take a lot of the fun (and luck) out of FF, as well....

Arent they still resting some in 16?

The Armchair had an interesting article on Football Outsiders which he linked to from here, that had lots of good ideas that solve these problems. Should be pretty easy to find with a search, it was a couple weeks before this season's start. I'm actually going to convince my local FF buddies to switch to his dynasty format next year to solve these issues...

How often does a team rest players week 16? pretty much never.

I have no problem with the championship in week 16, because NFL teams almost NEVER clinched that early. But that said, if I make the championship in my league and Alexander and Harrison are on the sidelines, I'm going to puke.

It tends to happen at least once a year. Last year: Vick, Dunn, Duckett, Crumpler. This year: Colts and Seahawks.

The real reason Fantasy Football sucks is that a team can finish 2nd in points(my team) and finish 5th and miss the playoffs to a 4th place team who scored the least points in the whole league.(12 team league!!!)

I dunno...I like the luck/skill combo that FF has. It's a lot like poker in that regard.

That's exactly the reason why our final Wild Card spots are awarded based on points, not record.

Re: The reason Fantasy Football sucks

I'm in two leagues, one based solely on record (I miss the playoffs with a 6-8 mark despite a 60% winning percentage in Breakdown, and the #4 point total, and leading the league in scoring 3 times), and one we do half & half. We keep head to head records and have playoffs. Some $$ is applied to this. Also some goes to the top 4 point scorers for the entire season (17 weeks).

If I had my ultimate league, we'd have 14 weeks of just scores, then the top however many scorers would make the playoffs and play it off head to head.

Of course I may just be bitter because I've been in 6 head to head only leagues and have NEVER finished at or above my scoring position, except one year where I was #1 in scoring where 4 teams made the playoffs and I was the 1 seed. The 4 seed was the #2 scoring team and posted the highest score of the season on me.

Variance is a bitch.

One of the many reasons I prefer a points race. Especially if it runs through the Super Bowl- makes draft strategy interesting trying to grab productive players who will also make the playoffs.

No, fantasy football sucks b/c a RB w/ 100 yards and 0 TDs scores fewer points that a fullback that gets a one-yard TD plunge on his only carry.

In most I've played in Rushing TD=6pts and 20 rush yards=1 point. What is the usual then?

That's most definitly not normal. Normal is 1 pt/10 yard and 6 PT TD's. 1 pt/15 is seldom used and 1 pt/20 is almost never used for rushing.

Mine is certainly 20/pts rushing. My commissioner must suck, I'm talking about you, Drew16. Douchebag.

that is an old, antiquated system. newer systems reward more consistent production over td hogs.

Re: The reason Fantasy Football sucks

The best way to run a league and keep excitement going all year long is to do away with matchups each week. If it is a 12 team league, then each week, the top six point getters get a win, the bottom six get a loss.

Then in the playoffs, week 14 top two records get a bye and the next four play, but again no matchups. Top two point getters win and advance to semis, same format.

The superbowl is technically the only "matchup" head to head game.

This prevents someone from losing a match 105 - 100 and see someone else win 67 - 61 which always pissed me off.

The real reason fantasy football sucks is because I drafted last on yahoo and my team was so incredibly bad that I just virtually ignored it the entire year.

Yay for finishing 2-12 with 516 points. How rockin was this team...

1. (9) D. Culpepper
2. (12) J. Lewis
3. (29) C. Martin
4. (32) J. Walker
5. (49) C. Chambers
6. (52) D. Driver
7. (69) E. Johnson
8. (72) R. Longwell
9. (89) Cincinnati
10. (92) B. Westbrook
11. (109) Ro. Smith
12. (112) B. Stokley
13. (129) B. Leftwich
14. (132) J. Wilkins
15. (149) M. Campbell

FF sucks because I have Tom Brady and Mike Anderson on my team, and chose to bench them this week, in the playoffs.

Dammit.

This isn't how real football works. Why should FF be any different?

*BRAG POST* First time playing FF...going to the finals this week! And after the week I had (Brady, T. Barber, C. Dillon) I like my chances. If I had started Cooley instead of Shockey and PIT instead of DEN, I probably would have posted an all-time high score for my league. Good luck everyone!

Because in real football, you control how many points your opponent scores?

Because in real football, teams make the playoffs based on their record against other teams, not by how many points they've scored in the season. My league had a team that was fifth or sixth (out of ten) in points scored but second in record against other teams. But that's okay, I smacked him around by 40 points this week. Going to the finals, baby!

So you got lucky...congrats.

Maybe you just have a very great karma defense, and can limit the amount of points you allow.

UCF THAYER 12-19-2005 08:44 PM

Re: Matchups > total points

In real football you have control over how many points you let up, in fantasy football, all you control is the points you score.

I would say thats a BIG difference.
