Live Tourneys paying back < 90%
I can fully understand taking about 1/10th of the prize pool for a tournament as "expenses"... What i'm not clear on is exactly what "expenses" are. I'm under the impression that it includes the dealers and floor. I don't work in the industry - that's why I'm bringing this to all of your attention. Is my impression correct? If it is, then why in the world would every live tournament I play in (usually buy-ins $200 or below) have wicked envelopes laying around saying "DEALER TIPS"? Again, the impression is those funds have already been "secretly" taken from the prize pool! Why try and "bake" these unfortunate tourney players of their money twice?
Here's a recent situation I was in, and honestly made me feel rather uncomfortable for a slight minute. This is a conversation I had about it: hero: when its 7 players - and we're all in the money - the floor man sits down with a big envelope says "DONT FORGET TO TIP THE DEALERS!" The envelope is facing everyone so they can clearly read it - isn't this overboard? Lord villian: lol hero: im like f*** that - u pay out 80% - well i didnt say that but i shoulda villian: what an a*****e hero: so anyway he pays me my 2nd place, 2 100s and 9 20s and 2 10s hero: of course its not 4 100s villian: a**f*** hero : i put it in my pocket - hes like dont forget to tip the dealers, and it pretty much it looked like i ran away. Cause I didn't even ackowledge what he said cuz I probably woulda said enough to not be welcomed back hero: he said something but i didnt care hero: i buyin $40, i make $360 profit hero: what do u want? 40 bucks? f*** u.. id give $10 - I REALLY would - but they'd laugh at the 2.5% villian: so f*** it PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SHARE YOUR COMMENTS ABOUT THIS EXACT SITUATION OR RATHER YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES REGARDING A TWICE BAKED TOURNEY TIP - IS IT REALLY OUTRAGEOUS OR AM I JUST OVER REACTING [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] |

What i'm not clear on is exactly what "expenses" are. I'm under the impression that it includes the dealers and floor. [/ QUOTE ] No. The "expenses" are the opportunity cost for the casino for not running cash games on those tables and collecting rake. The "expenses" are the replacement rake. You can't assume that the dealers are getting part of that beyond their regular pay. In fact, when someone says "don't forget to tip the dealers" they are saying that those "expense" are all going to the house. So not tipping in this situation is the same as not tipping in a cash game. |

I'd give $10 - I REALLY would - but they'd laugh at the 2.5% [/ QUOTE ] I'd just give the ten dollars if that's the amount I wanted to give. Speculative presumption about how someone else is going to respond to such a thing is pretty unreliable. Whether they thanked me profusely, seemed mildly grateful, indifferent or scorned me, is something I would respond to if and when it happened. If I knew, and I mean really knew as in having actual experience that giving $x would likely be laughed at, I would pull the floorman to the side and tell him why I was not giving him anything. |

Eventually this idiot will learn to read the sticky at the top.

This is not the same as the "i dont wanna tip the dealer" threads
He clearly said he is unsure if the expenses taken out include tips. Additionally he said that the floormen were tip hustling and would have scoffed at ten dollars. He never said he didnt feel the dealers deserve a tip, but thinks its quite likely that he has already with his buy-in. |
