My friend asked me if there were Ugly-But-Sexy women. (After giving me a list of Ugly-But-Sexy Men, e.g. Keith Richards). I'm not sure exactly what she meant, but Juliette Lewis is the first woman that came to mind -

Al,

This is an excellent topic. I think that maybe "Ugly" is not the exact right word, but I definitely agree with the general idea. I especially find a lot of female musicians and other artistic types to be very sexy, but not always conventionally hot.

I will return later with pictures and examples.

there's a term in french for it: "jolie laide," which translates literally into the easily mocked phrase, "pretty-ugly," referring to women who are unconventional in their beauty. or as francis bacon put it, "there is no exquisite beauty without some strangeness in the proportions."

edit to add: i think she's simply ugly, but a good friend of mine finds sarah jessica parker to be a jolie laide.

They did an episode of seinfeld where he had a girl that looked good one minute and then was ugly the next. I think Uma is one of these girls. For example, I think she is hot as hell when she is at the japanese lunch counter in Kill Bill, but in other scenes, yeah, she looks kind of messed up.
