Geography trivia
try to do these without looking at a map or other referrences. I'll post the answers tommorrow
US Trivia What is the most populous city east of Reno NV and west of the Mississippi River? What is the first foriegn country that one reaches when travelling due south of Detriot Michigian? Not Counting Alaska, which state extends the furthest north? What state extends the furthest east? What state capital has the highest elevation? What state has the highest population density( per sq mile)? Not Counting Alaska, which state has the longest coastline? What is the only city in the world(of course it happens to be in the US) where a boat can sail, under a train driving, underneath a car driving, underneath a plane flying(I think I worded that one right)? What is the only state capital to not have a McDonalds? What state east of the mississippi has the largest land area World Trivia What're the two countries in the world which start with a "A" and don't end in one? How many continents have a city named "Rome"? What is the only country to have a non-rectangular flag? What country's flag is flown Blue Side up during peace time and Red Side up during war time(this is the only country in the world who changes their flag for peace and war time)? Seoul, the capital of South Korea, literally translates into what word in the Korean Language? Which county has the highest population density(per sq. mile)? The Airport with the world's highest elevation is in which city? |
Re: Geography trivia
I'll just guess at these. Results in white:
1. Dallas, TX is the biggest. 2. Canada. 3. Maine (I'm guessing this is wrong). 4. Alaska is the furthest east. 5. Denver, CO. is highest elevation. 6. MA, for highest population density? 7. FL has the longest coastline. 8. I don't know. 9. I don't know. 10. Illinois has the most land area? (Note: If you count Alaska because of the IDL then the answer is Alaska). World Trivia: 1. Afghanistan, Azjerbaijan(sic?). 2. 6 contintents have a city named rome. 3. I don't know. 4. I don't know. 5. I don't know. 6. Japan has the highest population density. 7. Airport with the world's highest elevation is in...um...Zurich? Some of these were damn hard. |
Re: Geography trivia
The first question is a good trick question. If you excluded Calif, Houston would be the answer. But Southern California extends east from the Tahoe area, but how far? So the answer must be LA.
Rhode Island for population density (2 house seats on hardly any land) Georgia is the largest state east of Mississippi. I remember this from Jimmy Carter's Presidential campaign. Extra credit: What is the second foreign country you come to going due south of Detroit? |

I teach geography (in Canada) and I'll give these an honest try without looking. We don't study much US Geog. here but I'd like to think I'm pretty good at the subject
1. Los Angeles 2. Canada 3. Maine 4. Hmm, I'll say North Carolina...(hope it's not Maine) 5. Denver? (hope it's not Juneau) 6. I'll say Massachusettes but it's a total guess. 7. Hawaii? 8. I have no clue so I'll say New York 9. I'll wager the capital of Wyoming.. is it Cheyenne or Casper... can't remember... Casper I think. (Juneau is my 2nd choice) 10. Georgia? World now... 1. Azerbaijan and Afghanistan 2. Wow. I'm gonna guess 6. 3. Nepal 4. I can't even wager a guess on this one. 5. No idea. 6. I'm assuming you mean country... Singapore? 7. Kathmandu (Nepal) Ryan |

LA? (First thought was Houston, but I believe Reno is west of LA). Canada Maine? Hawai'i? I think it's in the Eastern Hemisphere. Pueblo, Colorado? New Jersey First thought Calif/Fla. But I'll go with Hawai'i. NYC? I dunno...Carson City, NV?...Pierre...Bismarck? Easy, Pennsylvania. WORLD: Afghanistan...and...? Antigone? <---What is this? lol. I'll say all continents but Antarctica. So, 6? ? ? (I don't know much about flags!) "Capital"? Japan? Probably wrong. It's probably a very tiny country. Kathmandu, Tibet? |

you clearly can go east on the international dateline, you cant compare a line to a pole, come on, if thats the best you got then your answer is clearly wrong.

Re: Geography trivia
Here's my shot at this:
US: 1. Houston, TX 2. Cuba 3. Minnesota (and NOT Maine) 4. Maine 5. Denver, CO 6. Massachussetts (sp?) 7. Florida 8. New York, NY (VERY badly worded question, I'm not sure what you're asking) 9. Montpelier, VT 10. Illinois World (some of these are wild guesses, I'm much better with the US one): 1. Afghanistan, Azerbaijan (sp?) 2. Five (I think, if spelled exactly "Rome") 3. North Korea 4. France 5. Peace 6. Luxembourg (I assume you mean "country" and not "county") 7. La Paz, Bolivia |
Re: Geography trivia
By the way, I see that some people are putting Canada for the second question. I'm not enitrely sure of this. I looked at a map after I submitted my answer and it seems to me that Canada COULD be the correct answer, depending on where exactly in Detroit you start. If you include every possible point within the boundary of Detroit, I'm not 100% sure that Canada would satisfy every point but to me, it doens't seem this way. Is this correct?

4. France [/ QUOTE ] Can;t be right. When you surrender, it's no longer your "war" time, is it? They wouldn't have time to switch em all over between war starting/surrendering, and what'd be the point, you'd only have to turn em all back again in a couple of days so I say Great Britain. We're at perma-war somewhere anyway, so we've never had a peacetime to actually bother turning it over. In fact I can see that somewhere, someons might say "Turn the flags? Bugger that, let's just start a war somewhere, much easier, what!" |

Its not really a trick question so much as its a stupid question because direction is relative. [/ QUOTE ] if you think about it, any city is east of another city, one just takes a lot longer. to differentiate (truly) we use the IDL, so if we cut a lin where the IDL was and laid it out cartesian style, alaska would in fact be the farthest right, or east :P |
Re: Geography trivia
its an arbitrary line, I think its easy to distinguish. If something is x miles east of a place and x +1000 miles west of it. Then it is clearly east of the place. This doesnt change with an imaginary line.
