Party 15/30.

Pretty good player openraises two off the button. Horrible cutoff coldcalls. I 3bet on the button w/ black KK. Blinds fold, they both call. Three way flop.

A-5-3 two diamonds.
LP bets out. Cutoff folds. I raise, he calls.

Turn is another Ace. He bets again. I call.

River is the Ten of diamonds. Flush gets there.
He bets, I decide to...


How was my flop and turn play?

Thoughts appreciated. Results shortly.

On the river there are a lot of hands that a pretty good player would bet that don't beat you. The pot is definitely big enough to call.

Turn play was good; one of those win the most when you're ahead, lose the least when you're behind situations.

Did he have either queens of Jacks? Just my guess.

When he bets the flop I'm thinking he has the flush draw or an Ace.

Then when he bets out again on the turn, it's like he doesn't want to give a free card if I'm on the flush draw.

Then the river puts up the flush and there's nothing I can beat. Oh well, I call anyway, he has AQ.

Hi Tyler,

From your description of the player and the play up to the turn, I sense a very strong chance that he has an ace. I would have folded on the turn. If he is betting with a weaker hand than yours, so be it. But if you call the turn, you must call the river.

Why did you raise the flop? It appears you raised primarily for value, believing you had the best hand. Given the risk that the preflop raiser held an ace, however, another reason for raising against some opponents would be to gain information. Combined with your preflop three-bet, your flop raise represents AQ or better. Another ace falling on the turn would provide little encouragement to your opponent, unless he happened to have an ace himself. Therefore, I think your flop raise would enable you to fold on the turn against many opponents. If you are not comfortable folding here due to this opponent's aggressiveness, then perhaps you should have just called him down without raising after the flop.

To address your river question, I would call the river if I called the turn.
