...and do you guys realize that Damon fits exactly what the yankees need: 1. a true leadoff hitter, 2. a star centerfielder.

FANTASTIC MOVE BY THE YANKS.

and damon is worth at least 11 million a year.

--and now the Red Sox look like fools.

Fine, I will be a homer fool. Someone hold the money and we can bet (Sublime, Clarkmeister, etc..) that BOS will win more games than NYY (same record is a push). Tell me for how much.

I'll take the Yankees.

The guy that is being dumb gets first shot. But, if he doesn't take it, sure. What amount are you thinking? Who on here should we ask to hold the money?

craig

I don't feel comfortable with anyone holding the money. Make it an amount that you would feel comfortable in me paying you at the end of the season. $1,000 is way too much, no matter who holds the money.

rwperu34,

1K is a lot to not have somebody hold it. And, I am not trying to be a prick, but I would be nervous not having someone hold the money. Especially since you don't have a high post count here. I am not saying that a high post count makes you DEFINITELY trustworthy, but it would help in establishing some trust. What amount were you thinking? If we come up with something good I will do it. Especially since AceKing is being such a prick. Plus, he is asking Mason and I think Tampa Bay has a better chance of winning the WS than Mason holding the money for us. He isn't a bookie; I know he wouldn't really be one in this case, but it still wouldn't look good. Let me know. We can work out the details through PM and then post it here.

edit: I sent you a PM.

sublime,

In this thread you have repeatedly stated or given evidence that this is a bad deal for the Yankees in terms of value per dollar. This you have done well, however you have yet to discuss why that matters.

George clearly doesn't care about value per dollar. He's getting another high profile guy that will bring in more publicity and merchandise money. Furthermore, he's getting the best available guy on the free-agent market (correct me if I'm wrong here as I could be). He's clearly more than happy to pay through the nose in luxury tax. Will this signing prevent the Yankees from getting players they need in the future? If so I could see your point but I'm not sure that's the case.

If George doesn't care about value, and the Yankees won't be prevented from getting players they need down the road then it's still a good deal even if it is atrocious in terms of value.

[/ QUOTE ]

i agree with everything you said, and i think my stance on these 'deal breakdowns' gets lost in translation. i love baseball, i love watching baseball, listening to baseball, and reading about baseball. however, the on the field game doesn't interest me as much as the business behind the game. when i see a deal get signed, i immediately want to see what the potential EV is on the field, and if the team made a wise investment. i do it for every player, from johnny damon to rudy seanez. this differentiates me from most *cough* fans, as they go by their perceptions of players and what they 'think' they are worth, while i try to apply math to the situation.

so when i say, johnny damon isn't worth 13m a year compared to his counterparts some people interpret that as a bashing of the player. its not.

as for the yankees, i was convinced they were finally taking a hard stance and were going to rebuld on the fly. deals like this prevent that from happening. while some can say only the yankees can afford to do deals like this, one could also counter that they are a team that CANT afford to do a deal like this. sooner or later the piper will need to be paid. you cant continue to field teams with high priced free agents and not having any homegrown/cheap talent to replace them.

[/ QUOTE ]

wtf you talkin about. we got melky cabrera.

just out of curiosity, what deal do you think would've been fair price for damon for BOS or NYY, and if the price point should be different for either team? curious also to that post concerning marketability of damon paying off part of his cost. that's part of the reason why mariners would never deal ichiro right?

Craig,
Rw seems way more reasonable than aceking. I would still never make the bet without an intermediary (you know this of course), but ace has done everything possible in this thread to make it seem like he'd figure out a way to weasel out of the bet.

You know Mason will not hold money, tread lightly.

Okay, you and JoA convinced me. I will bet this with Rw. I think I can take being called a coward by AceKing.

Let me know what you want to do Rw.

I'm going to read this whole thread later, but right now I'm pretty pissed off because my [censored] cat is named Johnny Damon.

Alright, rwperu34 and me have made our bet. I took BOS and he took NYY. $100 + $10 per game (half games are worth $5) with a cap of 20 (max win $300). A tie is a tie. Whether the teams make the post season or not is irrelavent.

I am taking BOS and he is taking NYY. I am not thrilled with my bet, since I didn't look at the odds first (which I always do). But, this will be fun for me either way.
