Because you usually make more money from AA/AK (which is surely a reasonably part of villains cold calling range unless hes really loose) by betting than you lose in potential bluffs that villain would make if he checked. Betting also means the pot will be bigger for that final value bet on the river. The only time I might check is if I think villain overvalues tptk enough to call a fair sized C/R.
