Guess my opponent\'s hand

I'm almost willing to offer a prize, just because I don't think anybody could guess what hand my opponent had here. But I'm too cheap.

It's 10-20 and I'm in the big blind with 8 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 5 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]. My opponent is in late middle position. There are five other players in this hand, three players between us and one on the button after him. He is an older guy who appears to be a reasonable player. I haven't played with him long, and I can't remember him showing down many hands. He hasn't played many, hasn't raised often, and hasn't been called on the two or three occasions where he bet the river. I'm guessing he's about even for the session, maybe up a little.

The flop is 8-5-3 rainbow. I bet out and get 3 callers and he raises. The player after him folds and I make it 30, folding all the players between us. He calls the 3-bet. Heads up.

Turn K, I think the board was still rainbow. I bet and he calls.

River 6. I get "that" feeling and check. He checks behind.

Guess what he had?? If you wanna comment on how I played it, go ahead and do that too. Do you like the flop 3-bet? Do you bet the river? Let me know...

The feeling that you want to play like a sissy?

Guess what he had?

K6o?

Do you like the flop 3-bet? Do you bet the river?

You played it perfectly until the river check, that was pretty bad even though you surely lost.

Well, I've been beaten by 24o 3 times this week but I don't see why he'd check his straight on the river...

I wish I listened to "that feeling" more instead of thinking "I'd be a sissy if I didn't value bet here".

well just on the basis his hand supposedly makes no sense... I'll go for 97 or 97s... for the nuts straight that he forgot to bet on the river

Re: Guess my opponent\'s hand

Of course you bet the river.

For his hand, I'll say pocket kings with "that" feeling.

he has a small set that he flopped. In that case I don't like the 3bet and I wouldn't bet the river

Thanks for the support. At least somebody backed me up. Sometimes you just get "that" feeling and chicken out. When he checked behind on the river, I was upset that I didn't bet.

C\'MON GUYS!!!

A bunch of replys and nobody has got it yet. (OK, well Huh got it) I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one who didn't consider this hand. Let me add a hint and say that it would be almost impossible for him to hold the hand he held...

The feeling that you want to play like a sissy?

I guess I deserve that. But what can I say, sometimes you just get "that" feeling and check. I think this is normally a pretty easy value bet on the river. And when he checked behind, I felt really stupid for checking...

I think he has 8 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 5 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] and this is a Fight Club "I am Tyler Durden" story.

Re: Guess my opponent\'s hand

Alright, I don't think I've seen any guesses of 76suited yet. You say the guy seemed like a reasonable player, so, from a late position with 4-5 players it's reasonable he'd play this hand. And with you leading out and 3 callers, it is reasonable that he would raise his open ended to both pump the multiway pot, and perhaps hoping to get a free card on the turn. If your play thus far was tight enough that he didn't expect you to three bet the flop and eliminate the field, I could see the possibility of him holding 76suited even more likely based on his PF raise and check of the river when he didn't make his hand.

I have a game for you. I'm thinking of a number. Try to guess it. I'll give you a hint, it's between 1 and 1000.

Seriously, do we get an answer here?

Re: Guess my opponent\'s hand

Since you've already shot down the obvious 76s, the only thing that seems to make sense is a PP between 99 and JJ. And even that doesn't make a ton of sense.

Anthropic principle

If he can't believe it, then I'm guessing it was something truly ridiculous like 24s or 47o. I'd guess 24s.

RESULTS

Sorry everyone, I didn't mean to keep you all in suspense. I just came back to check on my post and there were all these messages. Still nobody got it. Anyway, I check the river and he checks behind. So immediately I feel like I missed a bet and flip over my hand. And he flips over...

88! Needless to say, this seemed practically impossible, given the 8 in my hand, the 8 on the board, the fact that he didn't reraise the flop, the fact that he didn't raise the turn, and the fact that he didn't bet the river when I checked. My first thought, well after yelling "How could you possibly have that hand?!?!" across the table, was "thanks for saving me $50. Anyway, thanks to everyone who participated in this discussion...

Re: RESULTS

This is great information for the future. Anyone who freezes like a deer in headlights with top set on a rainbow board is the kind of opponent you want.

Pop him a lot if it keeps him from betting his big hands, it will make it cheap for you to draw out on him.
