Big Tunica Change

Ken Lambert Jr. resigned his position as poker room manager at Horseshoe. He accepted a postion as Director of Poker Opperations for Gold Strike. I imagine some changes will come from both casinos in the near future as a result.

Keep us informed as much as possible. I want to cuise back down and play again but I won't go during the WSOP maddness so Febuaray is probably the soonest but it could be March. I would come down tomorrow if work and the Holidays didn't demand so much time.

This should be interesting to say the least. Gold Strike definately need some direction.

Any predictions on the shoe? TJ? Dennis returning in Kennys place?

[/ QUOTE ] Right now T.J. is acting manager. We'll have to wait and see but a few names have been thrown around. Dennis was one. Karen from the Grand was another. I'm sure Dale will put in for the job. T.J. wants the job. I don't even want to predict who they'll put into it. I just hope whoever gets the room cares as much about it as Kenny did.

From the few times I've been there I don't think the Horseshoe needs to change much.

That's what I'm hoping. We're not broke and don't need to be fixed!

"How to screw up a top quality poker room in 60 days."

That reminds me of what an old timer vegas dude once told me about another female poker room manager (who was about to start running my favorite room at the time/ which is since long closed)....

He said "Every place she has ever gone, she left the place in worse shape then when she got there".

True to form....
When she got there, the room was very popular. When she was "let go", it was on it's last leg, lucky to get one table going each night.

All in just a couple of months.

Best of Luck

Howard

This is an ongoing problem our industry has. There are quite a few managers out there that get a room, mess it up, and then get anotehr room becasue they have experience managing a room.

This patern may continue at the Horseshoe in TUnica if they go with one of the "experienced" poker room mangers in town instead of finding someone that knows poker.

She was up here recently playing poker and RUMOUR repeat RUMOUR was that she was after the assitant poker room manager job at Ceasar's IN. Supposedly Jimmy is in line for that job and I hope he gets it. Jimmy really does on hell of a good job and I would like to see that kind of behavior encouraged.

Re: Big Tunica Change

Development not as big as may seem. Harrah's now has two poker rooms in a pretty close proximity (Horseshoe and Grand). Grand has a much better physical situation for tournaments than Horseshoe. In fact there is no comparison. There is no room at Horseshoe. So, whomever is manager at Grand has a more sound position, because that's where most of the tournament action is headed. I think another one of the Horsehoe floorpersons jumped ship and was hired at Gold Strike, prior to Lambert. (I know I saw him working there.)

Your talking about Joe D. He quit Gold Strike a while back and was just hired in the last couple weeks as poker room manager at Sam's Town.

The big difference is when Grand has 2 games going Horseshoe has 16. There's no comparison as far as live games are concerned. "Harrah's" has put HUGE limitations on the tournaments we can run at Horseshoe because it might hurt the Grand. The main reason Ken Lambert quit the Horseshoe is for the first time he had restrictions put on him on how to run his tournaments and the room in general.

What makes a GOOD room?

Let me try to name a few.
Quality dealers

Friendly staff

Good food and Comps!

Wait times

Wide variety of games (Stud, 3-6, 4-8, 10-20, 20-40, NL or PL, Omaha)

Room location, atmosphere, smoke and or tobacco free.

Poker rate available?

I'm sure there are a few things I left out but those are the main things. Feel free to add to my short list.

Re: Big Tunica Change

Karen trashed the Grand which, during Dale's reign, did provide legitimate competition to the HS. So now Harrah's might give her the opportunity to do the same to arguably the most player friendly room in the country? Seems to me the problem lies with the manager of the poker room manager. Apparently Harrah's is looking for someone to "shut up, and do what you're told" at the HS. Karen has demonstrated her willingness to comply.

I predict if Ken is given a free hand, the GS will get the business.

bigfishead 12-23-2005 10:09 AM

Re: Big Tunica Change

And prior to the Harrahs takeover the 3 weekly tournaments at the show smoked the competitions daily events.

In fact Karen totally screwed up a decent tournament schedule and not so bad structure within the first 60 days of her arrival at the Grand. I went there one off day for the Friday 7pm...got there at 1pm to play live first...they had changed it to 4pm with signups ONLY from like 11am -1pm or some crap. I LMAO at that one...it went from around 80-90 in attendance to 18 in 1 fell swoop!!

Kenny had to know that Harrahs was gonna tell him how to do his business. Thats why I left. When I saw what they did to Joe D and Jeff H in the middle of the WPO...I knew I was done. And when Kenny offered me to take over graveyard shift I laughed and told him no thanks. 30 days later he got my notice. I hated leaving there for LV & Bellagio. I love Tunica alot. The people are fantastic. The games are good. But I knew I wouldnt hang with what I felt Harrahs would do. That was the sole reason I left. Harrahs.

Best wishes Chipr777, give my regards to everyone for me. Wish them all a happy holiday.

THe Fri 7pm at the Grand was my baby, they coldn't wait to change it. That was not a one person job, it is an entire attitude. Even when Dale was still there and gave me a free hand with Fri night I had no fewer than 5 dealers a night want to know why we didn't shorten the levels or give them fewer chips to get it over with faster. At the time the Grand employed mostly dealers that fealt the players existed for them to make money rather than understanding they had a job only because players would come to their room.

To be fair to Karen, the real wrecking came from Herb Gee who hired her when therr were applicants that actually were familiar with poker. Herb had already set the downward spiral in place which is why Dale left; in Karen he was able to find someone that was happy to have a job even if it was at a crappy poker room.

One thing I've always loved about the shoe is how they take care of people.

I play there about once a week. Try to play some tourneys. I'm not a high roller btu they treat me like they treat everyone, with respect.

Seems like every time I call or anytime I ask they treat me with a courtesy like no other.

I wish I could name all the names but Mark, Dan, Susan, Dalesheeeesh EVERYONE there seems to be top notch.
