1)free card, yes.
2)must bet IMO as too many overs can come to beat you.

On the first hand I check and take the free card. It's highly likely you are behind and unlikely you will get both opponents to fold.

On the second hand I grit my teeth and bet and see how the other react.

I check with this board. There are 2 overcards to your pair and there are gutshot straight possibilities that are getting the proper odds to call. I check hoping to spike an 8.
