Hi there.

Someone limps. You raise. It's folded to them and they call. It's a heads up pot on the flop. They check to you.

How do you determine what amount to bet, if anything?

Context: full ring SSNL.

this is still too vague. you didn't mention your hand, the draws, etc

this is a style issue. i think anywhere between 2/3 and full pot is the right answer...

Okay, I'll get a little specific here:

In a weak-tight game, which is uncommon in SSNL, this is my strategy:

I bet whatever amount I think will give them crappy odds to improve, knowing:

1) That they're good enough to fold when they have bad odds.
2) That they will assume that they need to improve.

Therefore the actual amount of my bet varies greatly depending mostly on the texture of the board.

Likewise, if someone were to program a NLHE bot that just called no matter what, then you would just push whneever your equity was over 50% vs a random hand, right, depending on your stack size, bankroll size and risk tolerance of course.

In SSNL, we get into a situation where our opponents will call more than they should, but not always, and they'll call larger amounts than they should, but not always. In other words, there's money to be made by value betting, but we have to apply some sort of logic to it that's more complex than in the "push over 50%" scenario.

So... what's the logic?

I will never bet less than 1/2 the pot on the flop (I save the 1/2 pot bets for the river in huge pots). Usually 2/3 to full pot is fine. I will overbet the flop when it is appropriate.

Sometimes 50%, sometimes 75%, sometimes 100%, sometimes some other number too. It depends on the board to a great extent, more draws, higher %... less draws, lower %. Also, ofcourse, on the player, your image, sometimes your cards although you should try to avoid that part, etc.

pot when there's a flush draw or a highly coordinated board, 1/2 pot otherwise. If you want a simple rule this is as simple as I can make it, without hating it
