Aight, some friends at my school are trying to develop a formal poker series and there've been some disagreements over structure. Where it's at now is posted below. I think 50BB for starting stacks is way too shallow, I also think the payouts are too top heavy. The blinds have been moved from 20 to 15 minutes, which I think is best. I still don't think they need to slow for the later rounds. The last thing is table size. With 18 people I think 3 tables of 6 is much better than 2 of 9. Anywho, wondered if you guys had some thoughts as I don't seem to be able to argue my preferences very well and wondered if they really mattered that much.


Tournament Rules for the first tournament will be as follows . . .

Every player will begin with $5 of chips.

The blinds will begin at 5/10 and go up as follows . . .
5/10 - 10/20 - 15/30 - 20/40 (raise every 15 min)

25/50 - 30/60 - 40/80 - 50/1.00 (raise every 15 min)

.75/1.50 - 1/2 - 1.50/3 - 2/4 (raise every 30 min)

This is a similar blind structure to the previous tournament but includes a couple of intermediate blinds we skipped.

Table Size: We will aim to have tables of 7-9 people. Tables will combine whenever we can have one less table and again have 7-9 at each table. For instance, if we begin with 24 players (3 tables of 8) we will combine when we are down 18 players (2 tables of 9). The final table will always consist of the final 9 players.

If you're considering different blinds at different levels then the early rounds should get the longer blind periods and not the other way around. Reason being is you have more players in early and less in late...longer blinds are needed when there are more people in. Also, you may want to add some more blind levels as the big blind on your last level ($4) only represents 4.4% of total chips in play (assuming 18 players) and it's been my experience that the game will usually end when the big blind is apprx. 7% of total chips in play.

Your opinions are attacking one another. If 50BB to start out with is too shallow in your opinion, then it would be beneficial to either have longer blind levels or to have more people at each table.

For blind levels, I strongly suggest at LEAST 20 min levels. If you swing it, 25 or 30 usually works better. At a 9-person table, it's hard to get out a lot of hands in a 15-minute blind level, even if you're using two decks.

3 tables of 6 only makes the blinds come around faster, increasing the speed of the action. I would assume the players want to feel like they're getting some play for their money, so 9-person tables usually will keep them in longer.

I agree. First, 6 person tables are pretty much short handed play. The blinds will be coming around faster and people will play more aggressively. I think if you're trying to accomodate those who want to feel like they're getting their money's worth, you should start with 9 players tables. Also, by the time you're into the later levels of your blinds, you'll want the blinds to increase. People have been playing for a couple of hours, they either have the chip stacks or they don't, but everyone will be ready for people to start busting out. 15 minutes is a good length per round.

You might consider having a side game going for cash for those who get knocked out. We play $5 at a time, each chip worth $.25, blinds 25/50, when you get knocked out you can rebuy for another $5.
