Clarify this term for me please

I have heard the term "sweat" as in someone sweating another player. I think it seems to mean something regarding tutoring or assisting in some way, but I am not sure. Can someone please let me know what it means.

One person plays while another observes (viewing the table but not playing) and then the two chat (outside of the poker table chat box) about the players play (semi-)realtime

I don't believe the term is restricted to online poker, is it?

No, although commonly called "railbirding" or
"railling" live. All newer players should have
a person to sweat; great learning tool if you
can find someone who is willing to share.

These can play similar roles:

Cash game recordings (Currently over bandwidth limit.)

Hand histories with a replayer

You can sweat someone live or online.

In live play, the sweater usually sits behind the player being sweated. Often the player will open his cards far enough so the sweater can see them. If you have a sweater, make sure they know not to react and expose the strength of your hand.

When I first started playing, I thought the word sweater referred to the piece of clothing. It made sense to me because they're often wives or girlfriends sort of draped over the back of the player's chair.

Also, on the forums it occurs often when someone makes the final table of a tourny. If you check the tourny forums sometimes they'll be a post for some sweat, it's just a harmless "hey check it out I made a final table, come watch me play" thing. It's actually pretty cool, I've seen a few 2+2ers win some nice cash by sweating them at a final table.
