Badgers game trip report.

I am not at all involved in this story other then that I know all the people who are.

Last weekend 4 of my friends went to Madison to watch the Badgers game (from Minneapolis). They went to some bars before hand and were solidly intoxicated upon arriving at the game. At the same time, they were far from stumbling/dumb/puking drunk. After walking through the gate they were talking about the bar they were just at and a cop overheard them. He stopped them to check their IDs. One of my friends is youngish looking so I'm sure they just wanted to give him a minor. The thing is, all 4 of them are 22-23 years old.

Anyway, the cops wouldn't except one of my friend's (friend #1) IDs even though it is HIS driver's lisence and not clipped etc. He showed him all his credit cards etc. and the cop just kept going "nope, nope, nope, you're leaving." Friend #2 (the one who planned the trip) gets very mad, says "thats bullshit, hes almost 23." They give him a Breathalyzer, he blows around a 1.7. At this point friend #1 is in handcuffs and still trying to make his case. Friend #2 tells him to "just quit talking to them, you are only making it worse." Upon saying that the cop who was dealing with friend #1 requests that friend #2 be arrested. He ends up sitting in the mini jail at the stadium for 20 minutes w/ a whole bunch of people who were far more intoxicated. He is then escorted out of the stadium and handed a $280 ticket for... some sore of disorderly conduct or something.

To rub it in, they went to a bar to watch the game after leaving and friend #1's ID wasn't accepted again (although he was eventually let in because the guy at the door "didn't care")

So they drove 4 hours down there, spent close to $300 on 4 tickets to not see a very good game, got awarded another $280 ticket and then drove back the next day.

The court date for the ticket was set for a Tuesday and the guy who got it works at an intership where he gets payed well, but hourly. That means that it would cost him over $280 in lost wages/gas just to go to court to fight the ticket.

Is there anything that he could do at this point?

Don't wear Gophers/Twins/Vikings apparel to a sporting event in Madison? Somehow this guy knew they were from MN and got his panties in a twist.

MN drivers licences? 3 out of the four are Madison grads so they were probably wearing red like everyone else.

Yeah, I guess if they were young looking, that's enough to get the IDs.

Nothing that will not be more risky than spend the $280 on the BS ticket.

I watched that game across the street from the stadium, and got the sense the security was tight. No idea they crossed the line like this though.

They have a public intoxication law there that they try to enforce as a pre-emptivie strike in big games. I was in the stadium the last time UW beat UM and several people almost died from the crowd rushing the field (1995?). Ever since, they try to kick drunks out on sight.

Next time be quiet while walking in. Or better yet, go root for your Gophers when they are playing Purdue at home?
