Most profitable type of gambling.

Had an argument with a friend a while ago about the most profitable type of gambling for a skilled player. By profitable, it is meant that a person is maybe a top 3-5% player in the specific field.

He contends that it is probably back-gammon(sp), or poker. I believe it is sports betting. My reasoning was that sports-betting offers a vast pool of un-educated players a low vig (5% is common online as well as dime lines for baseball) and there is a lot more oppurtunity to take advantage of a profitable situation for a large sum of money (i.e. you don't have to sit on a huge bankroll, cause the big-game is filled with pros). Opinions?

If you are the bookie, yes.

I would agree with you, Huh, in that sports betting is by far the most profitable gambling if done correctly. There are so many +EV options out there, and literally ways to make extremely low-variance almost risk free money if you know where to look.

The most profitable type of gambling would be any game of physical skill if you are in the top 3-5% of the players in the world. This cannot be disputed. In sports betting you have no control over who plays when, you cannot adjust the line without adjusting the vig and do not know the internal motivations of others. When you are betting on only yourself you have full control of all variables including choosing to only play against others whom you know you can beat. Why take a 3 or 4 % edge in sportsbetting when you can have a 99% edge betting on your best game?

I have heard that many think Golf betting is the best for this very reason.

For example, when different books post very different numbers for the same moneyline, you bet each side of it on the book that's most advantageous, and guarantee yourself a profit.

I have an affiliate for Pinnacle, he was a former bookie. Anyway, he said he made his nut for years betting golf. However, in recent years, the lines have become much sharper. He does not bet golf anymore because of that reason.

I think poker is really the most profitable type of gambling if you are that good + I think you have still less variance than you hage in sportsbetting. I dont know very much about sportsbetting though.

This would generate little action.

Chess is a game of pure skill and thus there is little gambling at it.

The suckers have to think the gambling in question beatable.
