Phils sign Gordon

I think this sucks....

id rather have hoffman for another 2-3 million a year i think.

I think we love the guy and would probably want him to still be setting up Mariano. That said, it seems like he's old. I really don't know. I just watch the games and root for the yankees. For educated opinions, talk to JoA or Sublime or something...

I'd rather have him than Hoffman. The third year sucks, but at 6 mil it isn't awful, I guess. Hopefully he is still good at 41.

seems awfully risky for 3 years.

that K/9 trend isn't very encouraging for a guy his age, either.

He's pitched very, very well the last two years (with a couple of meltdowns in the post-season). .180 and .203 batting averages against; solid ERAs.

Re: Phils sign Gordon

he was great, but at that age, $6M simply isn't worth it. he made a little over that much total in his two years in new york, and it was a bargain. i hope he pitches like he did the last two years for the rest of his career though.

yanks should be doing everything possible to sign farnsworth now. bad news is that gordon's contract probably set the market price for farnsworth at close to $6M per, if not more.

Re: Phils sign Gordon

its a better deal fiscally than the wagner (especially) or ryan deals, however the added risk of his age has to be factored in. he has been really durable the past 3 seasons, but has pitched a ton also. torre REALLY ran this guy into the ground the past few years and i suppose his risk of burnout lessens the relative vale of the deal.

i dont think paying 2-3m more for hoffman would be wise at all.

It's definitely bad news for the Yankees to lose Gordon. That and the Yanks' failure to sign Ryan should put a dent in their bullpen for 2006.

Gordan is probably slightly less of a risk than Trevor Hoffman. To pay Hoffman $2 mil more would be a waste of money.

Of all the big relievers that have signed so far, this seems like the best value.

Re: Phils sign Gordon

i think this move sucks, i was hype on the idea of trying to get baez as the closer and gordon for setup - sounds like gordon was only going to go somewhere he was guaranteed to be the closer - i also would have enjoyed farnsworth/baez, or just farnsworth

gillick knows what he's doing, certainly a lot more than ed wade ever will, but 6 mil in 3 years for a 41 year old closer makes my skin crawl
