PSP vs Nintendo DS
As a birthday gift for my brother, which one is better and why? I know lots of it depends on what kinds of games he likes, but if you had to choose one, which would it be?

Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
MarioKart DS looks really fun, but I haven't played either. I'd take the DS, but I suspect I'm a minority in this opinion...
|
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
There are basically zero good games for the PSP. The DS has Mariokart.
|
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
DS based on Mariokart alone.

Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
oh come on,
<ul type="square"> [*]Lumines [*]Socom [*]GTA:LCS [*]Hot Shots Golf [*]Wipeout Pure
the games are starting to come ladies. nintendo is already looking to replace the DS. |
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
I have the DS and it sucks but I just got Mario Kart today so it will be fun for a while.
Wouldn't buy DS again though. Heard the PSP doesn't have much out eiter so wouldn't buy that. Tough choice, they both kind of suck. DS is a lot cheaper though. |
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
dang, this thread almost convinced me to pick one up just for MarioKart. The DS is not that fun though?
|
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
PSP rocks... i don't know what you are talking about in the way of games... GTA, Starwars battlefront II, Twisted metal, plus the UMD movies? I actually dont own any of the UMD movies, but i bought a 1 gig Sony stick and have put several movies on there. I think that i am actually going to watch starwars 3 tonight at work. it plays mp3s, has wifi, and the screen looks awesome. If you already have gameboy games then the DS maybe the way to go, but i didn'y and the extra $100.00 was worth it to me just for the ability to watch movies. anyway, if you want a portable gaming system... take my word for it the PSP rocks.

Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
The real question to ask is this: Does he have an ipod?
If he has an ipod the PSP is worthless and you should get him a DS because the PSP doesnt have any games. Edit: My little nephew uses the PSP to listen to music because he doesnt like any of the games, but he doesnt have an ipod so it works out. |
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
DS. It's cheaper and the game lineup is better:
Mario Kart, Castlevania, Advance wars = All engrossing games that match any console experience Meteos, Metroid Prime Pinball, Wario ware = good pick up and go games Coming in a bit: Metroid Prime Hunters, Animal Crossing, Mario and Luigi 2, FF III. There's also a bunch of games that aren't A+ but are still fun. The PSP is more expensive and has Lumines, GTA, and Wipeout/Ridge Racer. Nintendo has done a really good job at rounding out their library for the DS. |
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
I voted PSP because I have one and there is one good thing about it...homebrew. People have written emulators that allow you to play every SNES game there ever was on the PSP. Same goes for Gameboy Color, Genesis, etc. People also write their own software and some of it is pretty damn impressive(the new DDR clone).

Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
I just don't use it much but maybe with Mario Kart (great game) and FF3, I may use it more.
|
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
yeah, wifi is the [censored]... kinda literally, as I beat my cousin who lives in austin senseless at mario kart, while on the pooper.
psp hardware is glitchy, and all the damn games are remakes. the ds however is garnering nintendo 3rd-party support it hasnt had since the snes.... watch out for the revolution. |
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
Sure the PSP has a lot of neat features and that home brew stuff (they were able to somehow boot an earlier version of Macintosh OS), but its all about the games man. The DS has so many good games.

Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
castlevania: dawn of sorrow is disgustingly good. best game i've played in ages.
meteos is great too. |

castlevania: dawn of sorrow is disgustingly good. best game i've played in ages. meteos is great too. [/ QUOTE ] yeah, I was kinda feeling like a career change, not wanting to break into an industry which feels like it's lost its ability to create, and give you that visceral experience only a videogame can... and then I played castlevania. wow. afterwards I finished my gravity module for an fps game. decidedly less wow. |
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
at first I didn't really undrestand meteos. Then I got it and I was hooked. Too bad you can't play that over WiFi

Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
btw, yall all know that when the rev comes out, you'll be able to upload NES and SNES games onto your DS and play them, right?
|
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
you can already write your own carts for GBA games. I understand these play in the DS as well? I have a GBA cart full of NES roms and sweet GBA games. If someone can confirm that this will work on the DS, I'm buying one tomorrow.

DS won't play old school gameboy games from the gameboy color era on back. |

Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
the rom carts work very well, as I jerry-rigged one that has usb connection straight to my computer, and can load and unload them on the fly.
stay tuned, and if there is need I will try to program a wireless connection to do this via the DS's wireless capability. |
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
Apparently you can flash the DS firmware to boot straight off of a GBA flashcart, butyou can't play *ahem* backups of your NDS games from a ROM cart? Seems odd, although NES roms alone can justify the purchase of a cart, I would like to play NDS titles from it as well. Either way, I am pretty sure I am gonna buy one of these this week.
|
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
I can look into it from a programmer standpoint if you want me to, but I never really got into trying to play DS games off of rom because I got them for so cheap.
NES and SNES games really do make the carts worth it. Who needs a book on a plane when you can run through FFIII? or see how fast you can beat Mario 3? I am such a nerd. |
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
mario 3 is already available legally. ff3-j is getting remade in 3d for the ds, and ff4/5/6-j are getting remade for the gba.
|
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
no offense to the "hardcore" ff fans, but honestly, [censored] ff3-j, I want my inappropriately named ff3-us aka ff6.
I needs me some 3d terra. btw, Im just now running through ff5... this game is damn amazing... final fantasy tactics-style job system. |
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
I love nerdy stuff. What are you using for the SNES roms and is there a compatibility list? I remember on PocketSNES for GBA I could play like... R-Type with no sound or something. Fill me in here
|
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
I will get back to you on this tomorrow as I am at the wrong computer to look this up.
btw, would yall be interested in a daily or weekly thread talking about some dusty game classic that time forgot, just so all us nerds can play it and stuff? |
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
gee let me think... YES. depending on system though, the only old school stuff I played was NES and SNES, but "played" is an understatement. More like "lived".
|
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
yeah, I would love to do that.
See, instead of choosing a different vent for my creativity, I decided on games as a profession, but I want to bring it back to old school, there's certainly something missing from most games nowadays. I will start a poll on which game/genre should be done first, and then we can talk about format and stuff. Also, if anyone would be interested in giving a good review, I would love to post the game prototype Im working on right now, as my thesis and my main portfolio for when I graduate. |
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
Wait, so how do I get these old school games for the DS? Links to lead me in the right direction?
|
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
look up the gba rom cartridge. it was made for the gba, and there are a ton of them out there.
|
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
In terms of old school games I loved...
Loved punch out Ice Hockey Baseball Contra RC Pro Am Some great games.... |
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
|
Re: PSP vs Nintendo DS
yeah, my xbox is modded, so I have access to all that loveliness, plus about 2,000 more games.
Im wanting to do the weekly section about two games, if thats good, one game everyone knows, and a game thats not so popular. pm me your faves and I'll see what the consensus is. |
