Goof Puts Man in Major Poker Tourney

KILLEEN, Texas (AP) - A computer goof has Robert Guinther headed for a seat at the World Series of Poker tournament in Las Vegas later this week.

Guinther, 65, entered what he thought was a $10 online poker tournament, but midway through he realized that he had accidentally clicked on a World Series of Poker satellite tournament with a $100 entry fee and it was too late to back out. He went on to win, defeating 180 other competitors and earning a spot in the WSOP $10,000 no-limit championship.

The tournament, which begins Thursday, will involve more than 6,600 players who either qualified by winning a satellite tournament or paid the $10,000 entry fee.

``This is the dream of a lifetime,'' Guinther said. ``I watch these guys on television all the time, and I'm excited about the chance to sit down and play with them.''

Guinther's son, Rik, kept tabs on his father's progress from his home computer in San Antonio and had to explain just what the victory meant.

``When I won, I let out a big Yes!'' Guinther said. ``I just thought I had won $11,000, but then my son told me over the phone, 'Dad, you've just won a seat in the World Series of Poker!' I screamed so loud, you wouldn't believe it.''

Guinther, who settled in Killeen after retiring as an Army sergeant first class in 1985, says he's a little nervous about the next step but knows he'll be fine once play begins.

I don't get why anyone would be more excited about a WSOP seat than $11000. They do know that you can just buy in right?

The guy was trying to enter a $10 tournament, I don't think he was planning on buying into the WSOP.

Yea.

I would have rather taken the $11k in cash and stay home.

Kinda odd fellow I guess.

This guy would have been destined to win the whole thing. But, telling the story in advanced has jinxed it.

If I thought I won $11K, but realized I actually won a WSOP ME seat I'd be super pissed. It's practically an $11K prize down the shitter. It might be cool to play in it, and everything, but I'd rather have the cash.

So the concept of EV means nothing to you?

Or maybe you are considering EV and admitting to us that it would be -10k for you in the WSOP?

I understood what the prize was. However, as others have expressed, I would much rather take the cash if I wasn't already planning on playing in the ME.

How did a $10 tournament with only 180 people give out an $11,000 package? Everybody would have to rebuy like 6 times.

Apparently none of you are 65 years old. If you're 22 and you play poker professionally, $11K and a WSOP entry are the same. If you're 65 and play poker recreationally, they're a lot different. This guy would never go to the WSOP on his own.

I hope he doesn't think he won $11K and a WSOP seat.

Re: Goof Puts Man in Major Poker Tourney

Can't believe none of you put value on the enjoyment and experience of going to the WSOP over some simple cash, guess with everyone playing online no one really loves the game anymore, it's just a job.

Re: Goof Puts Man in Major Poker Tourney

I assume he just didn't realize you could buy in for $10K. I don't know how he thought you could get in, but I can't see how a seat is worth more than $10K to anyone when it's only $10K to buy in directly.

Maybe if he wouldn't have spent the $10K, it lets him "splurge" without feeling irresponsible about the money.

For me it would be a very very large longshot cause I suck at NLHE, so yes it would be $10K down the shitter.

I just think with a field of that size, and so many players with much more skill than the average player who goofed his way into the tournament that some would be better off taking the money. I know I would.

What's really funny is that this is almost the IndieMatty story. He had no idea he was in a WSOP satellite tourney until partway through. This was only his 3rd MTT ever.

He went to finish.........2 spaces outside the prize.

About the original story..

It just amazes me that people can't say WOW, what a great story!! Instead, they sneer at the fact that the guy is more excited about a 11k buy in then getting 11k in his pocket. Who cares?!?! He's playing in the WSOP!! Wish him good luck, maybe he's the next Moneymaker.

It's because a seat and $11k are essentially the exact same thing, except with a seat you don't have a choice. See?

Re: Goof Puts Man in Major Poker Tourney

Did you consider that maybe, having won $11,000 "by accident", this man would have entered the WSOP with the money anyway figuring he had a shot? Maybe he'd been looking for an excuse to blow all that money.

Heck, I know I'd feel like I was destined to play if I managed to win a tournament I didn't even mean to enter.

Actually, based upon questions I get asked ALL THE TIME by both reporters and regular people who spot me in airports and such, most people seem to think you have to win your way into the event. Many people are very surprised when I inform them that anybody can show up with $10,000 and buy into the event.

If he was really upset about winning the seat instead of the cash and/or he really needed the cash, he can always allow his friends and family to buy small pieces of him. He pockets some cash, and still has a freeroll for a large portion of anything he wins.

2+2er Geormiet's story of how he qualified for last years WSOP rules over this one.

He entered some sort of freeroll into what he thought was a bigger tourney and then had to leave in the middle of it so he started playing insane, ended up winning, and then finding out the next day he actually won a seat in the WSOP.

Here are excepts from the thread last may in the internet texas hold 'em forum...

I'm in a tournament at pokeworld right now, down to 11 spots. I'm chip leader with 46k, more than twice what second place has.

top 2 spots give an entry to pokeworld's $10,000 WSOP tournamant.

only problem...i have to play a wedding gig in 20 minutes!!!! What should I do???

ARGH!

[/ QUOTE ]

[ QUOTE ]
1000 frequent player points. 109 entrants. knowing that i was on a time constraint, i was gambling it up. I didn't mean to get lucky and become chip leader...

Crap crap crap...Why is the break lasting so long?

[ QUOTE ]
How about this hand?
Ok, I'm in the big blind with 97s. 3 limpers. I've got everyone covered by a LOT, and it's time to get crazy, so I push in. Uh oh...2 callers??? Well, I guess the poker gods have a sense of humor, because the flop comes T86, and now I'm sitting on a 50k stack.

2:30: Crap crap crap. I can't leave. I have more than double 2nd place, and there are only 8 players left. But I can't be late to this damn wedding!! Ok, raise, raise, raise, gotta make this tournament end quickly. I'm completely running over the table, there is only one player who has been putting up any resistance.

2:45. Down to 3. I have 80k, 2nd has 50k, and 3rd has 10k. Top 2 spots win seats. I raise medium stack all in EVERY time he has the BB - he simply cannot call because small stack is so close to busting out. Pretty soon, I have 110k, and the other 2 have around 20k each. After what seems like an eternity, small stack busts out. WOOHOOO!!! Other stack and I go all in, I win with a flush.

Before my win has time to sink in, I have to run, I'm late as hell! I sprint out to the car with my cello and drive like mad, making the wedding just in time.

And actually, I'm not sure what I won. Apparantly pokerworld is holding a $10,000 buy in tournament????

I will be honest, I would not feel comfortable playing for these stakes. I would MUCH rather have the cash. Maybe I'll have to find a way to pawn the seat off on ebay or something. Or maybe all the players in the tourney can just chop up the prize.

[/ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ]
I'm really confused right now.... I think I may have won a seat in the WSOP's main event.

...but pokerworld's customer support is not very helpful at 11PM on Sunday.

They say they will e-mail me with details in the morning...

JESUS CHRIST. I can't play in the WSOP main event!!??? I would rather have $5000 in cash!!
