Scenarios for Top 2 Picks in 2006 NFL Draft

Taking a look ahead it looks like there are 5 NFL teams who are in the hunt for the Top 2 picks in next year's Draft.

Houston (1-12)
San Fran (2-11)
Green Bay (3-10)
Jets (3-10)
Saints (3-10)

The consensus top 2 prospects for the draft seem to be Bush and Leinhart, so what do you think each of these teams would/should do if they end up with the #1 or #2 pick. I'm thinking...

Houston
#1 take Bush
#2 take Leinhart if Bush is gone

San Fran
#1 take Bush (probably the easiest decision of all the teams)
#2 try and trade it

Green Bay
#1 take Bush
#2 very interesting, Favre is old and Rodgers looks sucktastic, but tough to use two #1s in a row on a QB, probably would trade it, but I think taking Leinhart would be the right move.

Jets
#1 Good lord, they're brutal at QB and RB I say Leinhart
#2 better slot for them, if Bush is gone Leinhart is an easier pick

Saints
#1 Probably Bush but its close
#2 if Bush is gone Leinhart is an easy pick

This all comes down to if SF has the will to lose to the Texans. It will be pretty hard, the Texans are trying really hard to lose all of their games.

I think that if the Texans don't get Bush, they'll try and trade the #2. Carr can still be an effective QB, and I know they are very high on an offensive lineman whose name is escaping me. And O-line is clearly where they need improvement.

Do you even watch football?? No way Houston takes Leinhart unless they don't keep Carr and pay him his $8 million roster bonus, which they already said they would.

You say Rogers looks sucktastic but he hasn't even though he has only thrown one pass in his career. No way they take Leinart.

And nobody is close to Bush. The Jets and Saints will take Bush with the 1st pick if they have it. If for some reason they weren't going to take Bush, they would trade the pick away for a boatload from somebody.

Chris Mortenson reported the Packers would seriously consider taking Leinart if they end up with the #2 pick.

I can't see any team passing on Bush with the #1 pick.

No way the Jets wind up with #1. If they do I think they take Bush.

If the Jets do wind up with #2 I doubt they take Leinhart. The will trade this pick to a QB starving team and look to take a RB lower in the 1st (like Williams from Memphis) and then maybe grab another 1st rounder or a 2nd rounder and grab an OL maybe a DT or a WR.

Everything I've read in the NY papers has me believing the Jets won't draft a QB until they know if Pennington will be able to come back or not (so not till the 2007 draft). In the mean time they will fill the void with an older veteran QB (ala Collins or Fiedler).

What does Houston do with Domanick Davis if they grab Bush?

What do the Packers do with Aaron Rodgers if they take Leinart?

The Saints could use both those players. Who knows how well Deuce can come back from his torn knee ligaments.

Houston would be retarded to take Bush. They have a decent running back, trade down and grab as many quality guys for their oline as possible.

Just because I love draft day craziness, now that the Packers pretty much cant get Bush, I'm hoping for some team to pull off a Ditka-like trade to pick up Reggie Bush.

I could see Casserly blowing all of our hard work these last few weeks by trading the #1 Bush spot for an extra third rounder. Or simply taking D'Brick 1st b/c (Hey, he was our guy!)

Every one of those teams neds D Brick, but at least for Houston/SF, they need Bush to rejuvenate the franchise

houston and sf need huge help on the o-line, but sf is seriously lacking talent in the skill positions and simply HAVE to take bush if they get the chance too.

with the niners luck they lose to the texans and get the first pick, only to have bush stay his senior year. ahahah. they sure as hell can't pick leinart and no matter how good D'Brick is, it'll be a dissappointment to take him first esp. with all this Bush talk.

If healthy the niners O-line could be pretty decent. Jennings, Smiley, Newberry, Baas, Harris is an above average group of talent, they've just never been healthy together yet.

Okay, seriously. Houston drafting Bush with the #1 would be the dumbest thing in history. Have any of you SEEN Domanick Davis play?

the best thing to do with the number 1 pick is to trade it. this is true every year. these teams are so bad that one player is not gonna make a difference.

if davis is so good then they should definitely trade the pick. or, they should trade davis, and draft bush.

If you are talking about Ferguson he would be a reasonable pick at #2

I don't know about this.

2002 Bengals were 2-14 and picked Carson Palmer and are now one of the league's elite teams.

The same arguement could be made for Peyton Manning, Mike Vick, even Orlando Pace. Most of the teams who had the #1 pick and aren't the Cleveland Browns have turned things around quickly after taking the best player in the draft.

Not saying these picks are the only thing that flipped these teams fortunes, but they were certainly a big part of the solution.

I don't know if Reggie Bush is that guy or not, but I think he could be.

For number 2 picks, the 2001 Panthers were 1-15 picked Julius Peppers #2 and were in the Superbowl 2 Years later. McNabb certainly turned his franchise around, but the rest of the recent picks have been busts.

Re: Scenarios for Top 2 Picks in 2006 NFL Draft

bengals are good bc marvin overhauled the oline and defense and filled the skill position with talented players picked in later rounds.

colts sucked for years with peyton (ask jim mora) and recently have made the additions to make the team successful.

i can buy vick. dude can turn franchises around.

pace is not gonna turn a team around. faulk, 3 awesome recievers and a long shot qb will tho.

Wrong.

Peyton's rookie year (1998) they went 3-13. They had one blip after that, in 2001 (6-10). Every other year they've won at least 10 games. I'll grant you they haven't been great in the playoffs, but "sucked" is a little too strong.

The Colts pretty much sucked in 1998, 1999, 2001, and 2002. Wow, weird saying that a team that went 13-3 sucked, but that team wasn't very good at all.

It's really only been the last three years that they've been good. And 2000.

Rumor has it the JETS might trade their 1st round pick to San Diego for Phillip Rivers and San Diego's #1 pick.

BadBoyBenny 12-14-2005 07:37 PM

Re: Scenarios for Top 2 Picks in 2006 NFL Draft

I agree with most of what you say here. My point was not that the first round picks were the sole catalyst, but that they were perhaps a bigger part of the turnaround than what these teams would have gotten by trading the pick.
