We all know the strategy for NLH for short stack play, <10 X B.Blind you need to gamble to double up. But what if several players on the final table are also short stacked and the average stack is probably not much more than 10 x BB ? Should i still be looking to gamble and double up or be patient because of the other short stacks ?

More of a reason to take a gamble because either everyone else will be looking for the same opportunity or they will be playing tight trying to wait it out, making it easy blind stealing.

strategy here is HIGHLY DEPENDENT on the payout structure.

But in most structures you want to aim high as they are top heavy. To do that you need to be aggresive to surive and accumulate chips. Survival and no. of chips go hand in hand.

thanks guys. In the actual hand i was under the gun 8 handed final table with blinds 10k/20k i moved all in for my last 70k with A-4s ran into pockets Q's and was out. i know 70k is very low with those blinds but some players had very similar or even less than me. My thinking was that i would either pick up 30k in blinds, double up and stand a chance of winning the tournament (4 prizes by the way ) or get knocked and go home an hour earlier with the same money as 5th, 6th etc. To me, the players that hang on for grim death with miniature chip stacks will never win tourneys.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

On the other hand, in the structure you're playing, you're more likely to be called by any A or a middle pair. In that case, a hand like JT has almost as much overall equity as Ax where X < 8.
