Ear Plugs or Noise Canceling Head Phones and NSFW
 

I would like to buy something to use exclusively while on an airplane. I dont want to listen to music or a DVD. All I want is something that will cancel out all noise and that is also comfortable. Do those cheap ear plugs work well, and does one size fit all(I have normal sized ears)?

edit: I dont want to buy the $300 Bose, because Im not planning on trying to watch DVDs/CD's on the plane rides.

I don't know if the ear plugs work, but if you're not going to get the Bose, all the other ones are probably a hassle to carry around (the Bose comes with a nice storage case).

It would probably be a lot more convenient to get the plugs if they're reasonably decent.

Noise canceling headphoens only work when they are generating noise. I've got a pair. Otherwise you just hear white static.

The earbud/plug style that goes right into your ear work well for removing outside noise. I had a pair of Sony's (link below). They are cheap, come with 3 different fittings for different ear sizes, and remove outside noise prety well. Only concern is that these might not be great on a plane since they fully plug your ear, and it might hurt with the changing altitude.

custom fit earplugs. you can prolly get a pair for under 150$
they also have interchangeable attenuators (-10 db, -50db, etc.)

wooly: I have the Bose ones and they do cancel noise without music, though it's a lot better with music.

Hands down, the Etymotic ER-4P. They blow active noise cancelling headphones out of the water and provide superb sound reproduction. They're also tiny. I wear mine at work all day (and right now). A bit pricey, but well worth it!
