Surprised by Vegas Rake
 

Just started playing in Vegas, and I am pleasantly surprised by how low the rake seems in 4/8 at the Wynn and MGM.
1 dollar at 10, 1 at 30, 1 at 50/60, 1 at 80/90.
This is a lot better than the 10% up to 5 dollars with a jackpot drop that I am used to from Michigan. And I think this rate is comparable to pokerroom.com's new rake structure.
Are most Vegas rooms like this? What about higher limits? (I should be moving up in a bit, just want to get a bit more used to playing live)

Yea, the rake is way better in Vegas, relative to anywhere else I have played. This also stays true as you move up. ie. for 5-10 NL at MGM it's $1 on 30/50/80/170 and at the Wynn they do a time collection of $6/.5hour, both of which are great.

In general, vegas strip rake is 10% to $4 on the smallest games, sometimes using half dollars or quarters, and sometimes with a jackpot / high hand drop as well. 5% is sometimes seen at 6-12 to 10-20. Wynn, bellagio and mirage have "rake schedules" for certain games which equate to slightly less than the standard strip rake. Off strip you're likely to find even better, 5% to $3 in some places, but always by quarters.

Here in WA it's generally 10% up to $3, plus $1 JP drop. Until about 1.5 years ago (I think) the Hideaway was $2 + $1 JP for 4-8 and 10-20. Those were the days...

I think most of the rooms in that region are pretty famous for their REALLY crappy rake.

Michigan, Indiana and Illinois all have atrocious rake at just about every room from what I've heard.


Tunica, Mississippi was $3 max-rake on all tables up until a little over a year ago (I think).
I remember going to New Orleans where it was $4 max-rake and thinking how completely obnoxious that was.

I was just unaware of how good I had it with the $3 max-rake.

Please excuse my noobness. But is the jackpot drop you speak of $1 for every hand you play? or is that a timed thing?

Also, when you say that you pay $6 or whatever per half hour, is there a rake charged on top of this?

I've only played BnM twice in my life, my local casino only started playing poker about 3 weeks ago. Their structure is $1 for everyhand you play (ie $1 to get your cards), but they never take a rake from the pot and there is no time charge and no jackpot drop.

They run two games, 5/10 and 10/20. My first instinct was that this is way too high at 5/10, being that it is 10BB/100hands. It is always 10 handed, and they generally get through 10-15 hands/hour.

My question is, how do you think this compares to a traditional rake or time charge. The $1 charge is the same at the 5/10 game as it is at the 10/20 game. Obviously this makes the 10/20 game better to play. The players are very bad.

Every hand, an extra $1 is taken from the pot to fund a jackpot, typically for a qualifying bad beat or high hand.

That is way too high. Since it averages at your card room to $10-$15 an hour, it seems comparable to $6/half hour time charge at the Wynn, but for two things: (1) that Wynn time charge is for no-limit 5/10, so the percentage that represents is much smaller, and (2) the Wynn is certainly getting more than 15 hands per hour dealt.

Better to compare it to a normal rake of 10% up to $4. The most coming off the table in any hand is $4, compared to the $10 every hand charged at this card room you describe.

What is the name and location of this place?

As games get into the higher limits the house will often use a time rake, rather than taking $x out of every pot. Usually everyone at the table pays for the next 1/2 hour at the dealer push.

The other way is to have a time pot, which is where the entire rake for the down is taken out of the first pot. This is only used in large games, where the amount being raked is relativly small.

$10/hand is a ridiculously bad rake.

That sounds extremely slow. I think the average is usually 30-40, depending on dealer or mechanical shuffler.

WHAT? $1 per player per hand? If there's any other game around, don't play in that unless your win rate is something like 20BB/100. And even then it's dodgy.... variance could bend you over way too easily.
