Bluffed on the Flop with Pocket Rockets
$540 buyin event at the Commerce. 278 runners starting with
T1500 in chips. 120 players left. Blinds are 75/150. I haven't been overly active or overly passive. Play in general is a little tight. I for the most part have had a poor run of cards or had a raise staring me in the face negating myself the opportunity to do much. I have black Aces UTG + 1. I make it T500. Player two to my left calls. Everyone else folds. I don't have a good read on him, he's relatively new to the table. We both have around T4200 in chips. There are two big stacks with around T8000 who have been dominating most of the action. Flop comes Jh Js Tc. I bet T700. He pushes. I fold. He flips over KQo. Comments aprreciated and my thoughts to follow. Bruce |

Discussion
I really thought this was an interesting hand and I was faced with a difficult decision. I presented the hand with a result because if I would have asked how to play the hand facing an all in bet everyone would have assumed I lost the hand.
Anyway when I was faced with a push I put my opponent on a wide range of hands from a smaller pocket pair, Ace big, K big, and of course hands containing a Jack. We can also throw in the Harrington 10% bluff factor to further justify a call. All things considering my range of hands that he could have which I could beat gave me considerable call equity. I also thought if he had a Jack he might not make a big move on the flop and try to milk me. So I called and of course I lost the hand. I had him barely covered so I had to listen to everyone including the winner tell me how stupidly I played the hand. This hand reminds of a hand from HOH 1 when a preflop raiser with pocket Aces was moved all in on a Nine high flop and Dan mathematically justified making the call. It's amazing to me how poorly people play and how little people understand the game. The more I play the worse play seems to be lately. I think there's a tremendous luck factor involved in a large MTT. Playing well certainly helps, but if you don't get lucky you're short term results are going to suffer. David or Sirrio alludes to this in another post. Bruce |
