Rules Question
 

Quick rules question.

Three players are in the hand. Player A bets the flop. Player B folds. Player C has yet to act. Player A thinks he has won the pot, so he throws in his cards face up. They land in the muck face up.

Player C realizes this. Now what?

C raises allin and A either calls or folds.

Now player C stacks his chips. Unless he was covering his cards with his hands like he always does.

Instead of yelling "FLOOR", the dealer yells "AL...".

So player A's hand is still live?

What if it's a limit game? They just play out the rest of the hand with Player A's cards sitting there on the muck?

The rule varies by Casino. At some your hand is dead once it touches the muck. At others if your cards can be easily distinguished (which in your case they will be) they allow your hand to be live.

A good practice is to wait till the dealer pushes you the pot before mucking your hand.

This happened in our home game last night between two new players. We (we being me and the only other experienced regular in the game) weren't sure what to do.

Player C made it easy on us by just folding (he was beat obviously) but some of the players were arguing he had the only live hand and should have won the pot be default. I guess we should set a rule for this type of thing.

Something like that happened to me a few weeks ago at the Taj. I was playing 1-2 NL when the guy in the 10 seat went all in. Being the only other person in the hand, I said "Call" and flipped my cards over. He mucked his cards, even though he had me beat. He said that he thought he had heard me say "Fold," although everyone else at the table heard me clearly. The floor was called, and they obviously gave me the pot, which I split with him (because I'm generous and gullible.... He whined that he had no more money and I felt bad for the poor sap, until he pulled out another buy-in 20 minutes later... jerk...) Anyway, sum of the story is that, yes, when you muck your hand, it's dead. And I've found that's pretty universal.

Agreed, you need a rule. I would have given him his last bet back and everyone would have likely seen that as equitable.

Rule should be for everyone:

Do not muck or otherwise let go of the "winning hand" until the pot is in front of you. Fair exchange. Your cards for the pot.
