Squirrels that live on my fire escape lost their house

Two squirrels live on my fire escape. They lived inside some sort of olive barrel. I didn't know olives came in barrels, but apparently they do. The squirrels are fairly entertaining, and they have figured out how that my cats can't get them so they taunt the cats. Basically, having squirrels live in a barrel on your fire escape is good times. Now the barrel rolled off and fell 3 stories. I don't think any squirrels were inside, though. DOCTOR: There's been massive trauma. We could of course try to save him but it would be costly, difficult and we'd have to send away for some special really tiny instruments.

EDIT: Sorry I couldn't find the appropriate pic to go with the quote.

How about replacing the barrel with something else or get a new one?

The squirrels in my back yard taunt my dog constantly. I find it amusing.

I'm pretty sure insurance covers this type of thing

I think the squirrels moving around finally just made it roll too far towards the steps and down it went.

So they were in/on it at the time then?

I'm always worried when walking around in NY that something is going to fall out of a window, or off of a fire escape, and hit me in the head.

It'd suck to have an olive barrel smack you in the skull from 40' up.

Squirrels love to tease predators (dogs, cats, whatever) It's always interested me. Apparently this tactic has some survival value, otherwise, I would think that they would just hide or run away., like most prey animals.

I once had a cat that made the mistake of chasing a squirrel up a tree. This was a very large elm tree, 70 or 80 feet tall. The squirrel led the cat into the very top of the tree, then ran back down to the ground, and up another tree. It took the squirrel about 30 seconds to get out of the tree. It took the cat at least 5 minutes. The squirrel apparently was aware that cats are a lot better at going up than down, whereas squirrels can climb down as quickly as they do up, and took advantage of that.

Birds are big fans of taunting cats as well. It is amazing how close they will swoop down to tease them.
