Check/push a bad idea?

Pechanga Casino $100 buy-in No Limit 9-handed
Blinds $2/$3 (Jeeze, now I remember why I like playing online so much)

Hero has been playing tight-as-all-get-out (probably not a good idea with those blinds, but that’s another story) and has $85. Villain is drunk and playing a very aggressive game (although just about every time it's gotten to showdown he's lost). He has $135 thanks to a few blind steals and opportune flop bets. I'm two off the button and get two red 10's. It's folded around to me, and I raise it up to $10 (damn $5 chips). Cutoff folds, and villain (on the button) cold calls. Blinds fold. Just the two of us to the flop, which reads;

Qs,10s,7h

I check, and villain bets out for $40. I push. He insta-calls.

I know I should be jumping for joy, but I don't think check/pushing was the right play here. But I may just be a n00b.

Thoughts? Should I have just pushed and made him call a bigger bet?

You had 85 left to start hand and he bet 40 on flop after you raised to 10?

Yes, this is a must-push. You only have like 35 left...

sorry it didnt work out for you.

Seems okay to me. Given your read on Villian, a bet from him was very likely which would then allow you to get your entire stack while you were sure to be the favorite. Obviously, the biggest risk is that he'll check behind. In which case, half the cards in the deck that could come on the turn are major scare cards. Against most opponents I would pot it but against a drunk LAG a c/r seems okay.

Did he bet $40 in to $15? Given stack sizes, you only have 2 plays: fold or push. Folding gets you shot then hung.

A $20 pot, actually. But thats just splitting hairs.

There was no way I was folding against his bet. I'm just worried that I could have given him a massive free card if he checked (I slowplay a bit too much for me and my bankrolls health).

And yea, it did'nt quite work out for me. A horrible, horrible beat. But thats neither here nor there.

Oh, I thought the focus of your question was the push, not the check.

No, I don't much care for the attempt to check-raise here. It's a fairly dry flop, and you are the preflop aggressor. If you check, you have very little reason to believe someone else will bet. I'll just bet myself to be safe, and I suspect checking is an error EV-wise.
