Gay Marriage

I wish I could put this more intelligently, but:

Someone please tell me why this is even an issue. Denying homosexuals the same rights that non-homosexuals have is out-and-out discrimination. How can so many people be OK with this?

By "marriage", I'm also referring to domestic partnerships, etc, that confer the same rights and responsibilities as marriage. But, if it's the word "marriage" that you want to hold sacred but are OK w/allowing the same rights under some other name, why? What makes the word so special?

Re: Gay Marriage

God likes marriage.

God hates fags (and arabs, and blacks, or does he love blacks now, I forget).

I know you're kidding, but isn't that the crux of their argument?

Great News! Gays Can Now Marry...

A gay man can marry any woman he wants.
A gay woman can marry any man she wants.

Whew!
The problem is solved. Gays now have the same right as straights. No need to discuss this topic anymore.

Discrimination against straight people still exists.
E.g.
It is still illegal for straight people to marry people of the same sex. Perhaps some day we can end this discrimination against straight people.

Re: Gay Marriage

If opposition to gay marriage is simply a result of bigotry by Christians or other religious people, why isn't gay marriage widely accepted in countries where religion isn't a major force?

I have mixed feelings on the subject, but I think you are being naive to suggest it is simply religious fanatics who oppose gay marriage. Most recent polls I have seen show about 65% of Americans opposed to the idea. 65% of Americans are not religious extremists.

In America (and most other nations), marriage has been defined as between one man and one woman. Changing hundreds, sometimes thousands of years of tradition is not an easy thing to do. It doesn't mean it shouldn't happen, but it is not a snap of the fingers type of decision.

Re: Gay Marriage

The real reason: the collective value of marriage is actually zero sum. If a gay couple gets married that makes the bond me and my wife share worth less.

Plus the Bible says it's wrong. Along with eating shellfish. Both abominations before God.

yeah you're not allowed to eat shellfish/pigs/fishes that don't meet the requirements...it says somewhere in bible.

i don't see how you can justify that collective value of marriage is zero and how gay marriage will degrade your own.

The policy argument against gay marriage is pretty straightforward. Marriage brings certain goods to society, the most prevalent of those being the bearing and raising of children. The opposite sex nuclear family is the best environment for raising of children and the proper raising of children, that is, future citizens, is of great deal of importance to society. Thats why the state rewards it.
