Purchasing a dvr without the monthly fee

My wife uses the VCR a lot and would like the ability to tape many programs withuot having to worry about tapes and all the issues they have.

So a DVR seems like the logical choice. We have DirectTV and they have a DVR but that has a 5.99 monthly fee (for tivo). We actually don't really need all the fancy features of the DVR. Pausing live TV is not important. Plus some of the nice features like it will tape all programs based on some criteria. We will be happy if we can tell it what to tape, just like a VCR.

What we really want is a VCR with a hard drive.

I havn't had much luck researching this and my wife's birthday is coming up.

Any help or ideas?

Shell out the $6 a month...you'll end up enjoying and using the other features anyhow.

It isn't the money. It just seems wrong to have to pay monthly to use a vcr.

The freestanding Tivos will continue to function without programming data (which is what you are actually paying for). You jsut have to manually program it.

I suspect that once you try that though, you'll decide that the $6/mo is actually worth it. I never knew how much I loved my Tivo til I didnt have it.

Absolutely. Tivo and the programming it offers is fan-[censored]-tastic.

The best $5.99 I've ever spent I do believe.

I wanted to watch TV on my PC but didnt want to shell out the loot for a new video card.

So i picked this up ATI TV TUNER

You can record on to your hard drive and even rewind and pause live tv.

I think this is what your looking for.

I have one of these, and its a real piece of crap. It bluescreens my computer continuously. Spend the extra money and get one that isn't an ATI POS.
