Your color scheme the first time was way better. Even the graphic designer at work liked it a lot.

Re: Cover Contest: Getting Started in Hold \'em -- Second Try

Rob, I'm not sure if the second one is better overall, but having the words "in Hold 'em" near "Getting Started" is a big improvement. Looking at the first one, the two halves of the title were so far apart that it was hard for me to read it as all one phrase. However, that may just be because my monitor is much larger than the book cover would be.

Btw, I really wish we would start using "holdem" instead of "hold 'em", but I know that hasn't been what 2+2 has done in the past.

Nagoo, man, that is an awesome awesome cover. Feels very Twoplustwo. Not sure on the middle pic, but besides that I love it.

I would love to see a two plus two book done up in Black. Thats sick dude, love it.

is this a book cover design competition or a cheeziest photoshop effects competition.

You're right, Glitch's design would be about a thousand times better if he toned down the outside glow, beveling, stroke and drop shadows, and cut the number of fonts down. I don't mean to pick on Glitch, the rest of them suck also.

On the off-chance that I'm wrong about the heavy use of effects, here's another entry.

No, but for a lot of people, the cover sells the book. If someone walked into a store and saw the cover for "Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players", they'd probably laugh and pick up Ken Warren's book. That's the reality. People are ignorant. Especially the newer books like SSH and HOH, people look at them and think a couple of 15 year olds put them together.

[/ QUOTE ]

While this is terrible news for 2+2, and we all want Ed and the rest of the 2+2 authors to have successful books, isn’t that better news for the people that know what those cards, 2d+2c=4h mean? Those that already know that no matter how flashy the other covers are, the quality of thought and theory is in the books, however ‘ugly’ the covers are, with the cards on the bottom of the spine.

BTW: The simple cover showing a showdown with the revolver signals to me that there is no effort to become flashy and polished. The lack of flash lends credibility to the book. It says that the authors believe that their information and discussion about the game is extremely sound. In general, it is reassuring to me as a player who is not interested in flash, but rather knowing how the game works.

Isn't anyone going to go the Mike Caro route and put a five card draw hand on the cover of a hold'em book?!?!?

We have a winner!

The "by Mr. Miller" bit was especially nice.

It's too cluttered, and I'm not a fan of the colors.

Re: Cover Contest: Getting Started in Hold \'em -- Second Try

im not a big fan of any of these so far. theres too many colors and stuff. too flashy. also, anything that says "Ed Miller's" sucks. i dont like anything that has "real" images on the front cover. HoH was pushing it but it worked as he has the identifiable face.

my suggestion to you designers is something very similar to feeny's book. i have no photoshop skillz so im not even gonna try. just stay away from real images. they are tacky.

nagoo,

yours is the best so far, but as someone else said, the colors arent that good. its the black. maybe try a grey or something.

if you could get a more cartoony picture for the middle this would be ok, ed's name isnt big enough.

also, i see a lot of "by ed miller". dont put by.

I totally agree!
But there are more funny things in that cover.
I like the airplane, battleship, and jeep.
Also, the bit at the bottom left corner is kind of funny.

I can't stop laughing at it.
Nice job glitch.

your second attempt is much better, but the guys finger nail bothers me. if i was going to publish a ton of copies of this book, i would want the finger nail on the cover to be trimmed.

I've designed a cover but (being new to the forums) was unaware that you cannot attach an image to your post. I don't have a website, so how can I get them up here?

Heres my cover design, the card pattern around the edge could be continued on the back and spine of the book. Comments appreciated.

Have you guys been to a bookstore recently?

I think you've all been reading way too many 2+2 books if you are excited about the design on any of the submissions so far!

I agree several are far superior to the 2+2 standard ugly cover, however I still haven't seen anything good yet.

The "bluff call" is an actual play. There's a cool story about it in Super System 1 in the seven-card stud book. It's one of the most advanced plays I've seen, but I imagine I won't be able to use it very often.
