Bill Russell....

...I saw him at the mall today at lunch. He was getting into a Scion. Reminded me of the scene in Police Academy when Hightower rips the front seat out of the civic or corolla or whatever. Just thought I'd share.

He coached the Sonics in the 70's I think. Probably liked the area, his place on Mercer Island is decent.

I once played golf behind him. He had to get almost into a 90 degree shape to reach the ball.

Used to see Wilt driving around town in his Maserati. All you saw were arms.

Always like seeing him on TV, that big smile and that cackle, plus he's perceptive, although he often stumbles over his words these last few years.

One of the true great giants (no pun intended) in American sports. And I don't rank him anywhere close to the greatest center of all time. But what a great man.

Re: Bill Russell....

He was an active participant in the Civil Rights movement. He appeared in the Deep South, Mississippi I believe, where tempers were short and Jim Crow followers were armed.

A couple of good books on the topic are The Children by David Halberstan and the biography of John Lewis. It's hard to believe these books are non-fiction.
