Moving up gradually vs. jumping into the deepend
 

Conventional wisdom is to start at a low limit, establish that you're a winner at that limit, and move up if your bankroll can support it. However, I've read a lot of posts in SSNL and MHSNL about how the various limits play a lot differently.

If your eventual goal is to be a winning high stakes NL player, could you reach that goal faster by just jumping into the deepend of high stakes NL play? (This is assuming an unlimited bankroll of course, so there's no risk of going broke and ending the learning process.)

Given this assumption, I think jumping in the deep end is definately the way to go.

if money didn't matter to you at all, then yes, jumping into the highest games would be best

This qualification ruins your question. In the real world the dilemma is risk of ruin at high stakes vs. waste of time/learning bad habits at low stakes.

It doesn't ruin the question. I'm just establishing that it's quicker to learn HSNL play by jumping into it.

The second part of the question, and I don't think there's any real answer to this because it's so player dependent is: how much would a player expect to lose if they jumped into 5/10 NL or higher cold before they became a winning player?

Like I said, I don't really expect an answer, but I do think it's an interesting question.

I learned how to play in a 10/20 live uncapped game. I lost $40K the first month - I was a complete donkey. I think it would be hard to lose much more than that live at that level if you have even remote poker knowledge.

I learned very quickly, but would not recommend this approach.
