Public Transportation in Vegas?

I'm planing to spend a few days in Vegas and will compete in the first event of the WSOP at the Rio. I would appreciate help deciding whether to rent a car. I've been told that a $5 shuttle can get me from the airport to my strip hotel. Can someone please describe the convencience and expense of using public transporation to get up and down the strip, and to travel between the strip and the Rio? Any free shuttles or monorails?

Thanks!

I only ride the shuttles if I have too many people to fit in a taxi. If you are with a group of 3-4 people then I'd rather take a taxi. If you are staying close to Harrahs you can take a free shuttle to the Rio.

The monorail is not free, see the webiste: http://www.lvmonorail.com/

What's wrong with the shuttles from the airport to strip hotels? How much more would a taxi cost?

Thanks for the link about the monorail. It does not appear very practical for my purposes. However, a free shuttle from Harrahs to Rio could fit the bill since I will be staying nearby. Can you tell me its hours/frequency of operation? If I stay too late at the Rio, about how much would a taxi cost to get me back to the Frontier Hotel/Casino on the strip?

Shuttles in general are much slower than a taxi would be. You have to wait for them to fill up at the airport, and wait for them to drop off people at various hotels. Shuttles just don't go to one hotel, they go to the hotels that people are staying in. If you have time to kill, a shuttle is fine, but if you want to go to your hotel as fast as possible, take a taxi.

There's a free shuttle from Harrah's to Rio that runs something like 9am-1am, and there is a monorail stop at Harrahs. My last trip to Vegas, I took the airport shuttle to Bally's and used the monorail. Didn't ride in a cab once, and spent about $25 total on transportation while I was there.

Roughly a $15 ride from McCarran to the center Strip (i.e., Caesars).
