How big is your nut?

...your living expenses that is. perverts.

I'm gonna make a poll just so you can be anonymous, for some thats a private matter. Others feel free to rattle em off (and we are talking monthly here)

I'm not talking about how much you SPEND a month, right now. I mean the bare nut. What you require to subsist without undue luxuries. I guess it gets to be shades of gray, but im talking about how you would live if say you had just lost your job and were unsure how long you'd be unemployed, having some but not massive savings (which you'd prefer not to dip into more than necessary). Also assume you've never heard of poker

So, basically, rent/mortgage, food that you buy at a grocery store, bills, gasoline, insurance, child support...stuff that has to get paid. Your 14 cases of beer dont count. Nor do the lapdances. Or flights to Hawaii.

I figure mine to be only around ~1100 CDN (~$900US), but that has much to do with me being young with no family. My apartment is super cheap too. I definately spend more than that every month, but i know i could hack it on $900US/mo and not feel deprived of anything too important.

Hope we get a good representative sample here, i think it may open a few eyes when you compare many of us who are college or just out, with the few old dinosaurs here who have familys and mortgages.

*just thought about tuition/books for some of you, i think that has to count too if you pay your own way, just chop the years costs into monthly)

SO:

I voted 1000-1250, but in 7 months I will have a baby, so I am sure that will increase rapidly.

Just my mortgage and my property taxes qualify me for the bottom option in the poll ($3400). I'm guessing around 5k en total.

I voted "I have several ex-wives", which is sad, because I don't have any ex-wives.

Re: How big is your nut?

Mine is less than $500, but I actually spend way more than that. I live with a girl inherited her grandmother's condo (mortgage free), so no rent. I don't eat much, so food costs are low. I have British citizenship so I don't need health insurance. I live in one of the most car unfriendly cities in the world (San Francisco) so I don't own one. I could probably get by on $200 a month.

I spend close to 10x that however. Having zero expenses is murder on your spending.

Thank you. My wife was on the pill. So, there was a 1/1000 chance of this happening. Yet, I can't hit a fcking flush draw.

My biggest monthly expense now is my property tax at 1100 p/m.
No outstanding debt, so I can get by w/2500 p/m for me and fam.

I guess i was a little naive? Having to shell out $60k/yr JUST FOR THE ESSENTIALS sure seems like alot to me. What kind of pretax income are we talking about to finance this? Given that you are paying for any sort of semi-frivolous thing over and above this, as well as paying taxes, IRAs, and i would hope investing a good chunk. Im guessing that you guys are pulling like 150k?
FWIW, the "ex-wives" option was meant to be anything >$5000, not necessarily due to alimony. I just figured anyone with a $5k nut had to be middlemanning a bunch off to others. Ahhhh, youthful ignorance.

nevermind me. about 3 year ago our monthly nut was like $2-3k. now it's like 4 times that, but i wish it was like 3 years ago. simpler life = better life.

Dude, my rent is $3300, and that is cheaper than my last place.

Re: How big is your nut?

rent 170EUR
monthly u-bahn/s-bahn/tram pass 67EUR
Health Insurance 90USD
Everything else, maybe 250EUR, if that.

so i guess around $650 or so.

$1200 rent in No Va kills me.

Re: How big is your nut?

counting food, gas, insurance, everything i spend maybe 1200/month if my estimation is correct.

i buy games and crap like that occasionally. i have never balanced a checkbook, i don't have a budget, and i don't limit myself on buying things i want to buy or anything like that. i just don't spend much money. i am curious about it now though and maybe i'll go through and find out how much i really spend. all my post-tax money goes to the bank/index funds.

mortgage is half of 900

condo fees around 100

no car payment

i don't pay electric, i pay cable (tv and internet) for about 100

cell phone, magazine subscriptions, and all of those sort of entertainment things are under 100

car insurance, home insurance, umbrella insurance, gasoline, and all that i'm not exactly sure but it's probably about 150

food is probably about 10 bucks a day on average so 300 there (this will go up when i'm not dieting but not signifigantly)
