CD Review- Fort Minor (This is a rap CD)

For those of you who are unaware of this CD, let me school you a bit. Yes, it is the side project of Mike Shinoda....before you write it off, read on. Shinoda wrote all the material, did all the beats, and produced every song. Jay-z however, was the executive producer. Apparently there was a [censored] load of material that Shinoda made, and he asked Hova to pick the best 16 songs, hence the album we now see. Also, this CD has several guests, with the most prominent one being Styles of Beyond. They show up on 6 songs. Pretty tight actually, SoB has been around for a while, so hopefully this gives them the exposure they need to somewhat breakout of the underground.

It is easy for rap fans to say "blah, just more LP [censored], dude can't rap anyways", but you would be wrong. Dude actually can rap, and he actually cares about rap, as opposed to just the money.

Standout tracks for me are "Cigarettes" which is dope for dozens of reasons. Check out the hook, and listen to Shinoda, you will know what I am talking about. Also, "Higher Road" is tight. It features John Legend on the hook, and fits perfectly. Finally, "In Stereo" has a totally bananas beat and is definitely the banger.

I am actually quiet impressed with Shinodas beat making abilities. He incorporates pianos and keyboards on most of the beats, which aside from horns, is one of my favorite instruments in rap beats. His drums are pretty hard too. One thing that can't be denied, LP and Shinoda know how to properly make CD's. The almost never stretch a song out; they always end them at the right time. Listening to the CD, you will go from track 1 to 6 before you even realize you are on track 6, and I mean that in a really good way. I have seen ratings for this CD on other sites around a 4.5 out of 5, and that is probably pretty accurate. No skits, no filler, tight CD.

In addition to this CD, I highly recommend you check out the Fort Minor/ DJ Greenlantern mixtape called We Major I assume you can't buy it anywhere so go out and download it. It has a ton of weird remixes and features plenty of artist. One of the crazier remixes is with a Bloc Party song, except its a rap song

I haven't heard any, but I don't listen to the radio. I would imagine a few of these songs will make their way there though.

They were pretty good when I saw them at the Talib/Mos Def show in L.A. Don't have the CD yet though.

The mixtape was better, but the album isn't bad. I can't understand why "Spraypaint & Ink Pens" was left off the album though.
