Remember the Oregon Trail?

I'm sure it's been posted here in the past, but:

The original Oregon Trail game.

Awesome. Hunting and watching your family die of typhoid. Great memories.

Someone just sent me this interview with the game's creator. I can't believe he didn't ask the biggest question of all: How the f*ck does one die of a broken leg? That ALWAYS happened to me when I played, and no one could explain it to my satisfaction.

That answer never satisfied me as a kid. I mean sure, I guess so, but it's really lame if you ask me.

Back in the day, infections were serious dude. There weren't antibiotics available like there are today.

I used to love this game. FWIW, my family always starved to death.

Re: Remember the Oregon Trail?

I know that. I've never broken my leg, though, so I don't know if they put you on antibiotics or not these days. Is it that easy to get an infection from a broken bone, or does it have to be a something like a compound fracture?

At any rate, it just happened far too often in the game, in my 11-year-old opinion. My 24-year-old opinion has softened somewhat on the issue, but I think they would've been better served going with something else, or at least giving an explanation during the game.

Re: Remember the Oregon Trail?

Also if the break is compound, the rough edge can sever an artery and you bleed to death.

Yeah, I also agree it happened far too often. The only thing I can come up with is people were far more clumsy back then compared to now.

Pbbbffft.

They weren't candy-asses riding around in cars and eating processed food and sitting all day in front of a CRT like we do now. They were tough mofos back then.

Re: Remember the Oregon Trail?

i used to play this all the time in my computer class in grade school.

whenever someone would manage to make it to the end where you are rafting down the river, we would always try to sneak up and hit the keyboard to crash their raft.

i would always have my people die by drowning in the damn rivers:

"the river is too high and fast to try to cross".

"we don't need no stinking indian help. full speed ahead on the ignoraemus express!"

...

---Your entire group has drowned. Along with your 8 prized oxen---

Yes, it does work but I never understood what increased the chances of it.

My favorite thing in the game is just to hunt and hunt and hunt until all the game is almost wiped out in an area.

chuddo 09-21-2005 01:35 PM

Re: Remember the Oregon Trail?

hunting was by far the best.

i would always stock up and see how many buffalo i could drop.

but they were easy to kill, so it was always impressive to gun down a few of the quick rabbits.

and let us not forget the ever elusive and delicious bear.

If the river was really shallow.

The best way to get across deep rivers was to hire an indian

My family members were: David, Mason, Ray, and Ed. Unfortunately, Ed drowned crossing the 2nd river.

I remember playing a game in like 5th grade.... How the west was one + two * three or something like that.

any of you play that game?

Luzion 09-21-2005 02:23 PM

Re: Remember the Oregon Trail?

Ok damn, I just tried playing this one. This is not the version I remember. I remember playing one on some Macintosh that had 256 colors and 100% mouse interface. This sucks playing with the keyboard.

Yes, that's the one I was originally thought this was - it's called "How the West was one plus three times four" - it's a game that teaches order of operations. I haven't found a working copy yet.
