Almost scary mind reading game....try it

I read at this board daily and never seen this, but apoligize if it has been posted. A friend just sent me this, and it read my mind on all 3 quizzes. Some of you may have done this already, since I know a lot of people here love Ebaum's World.

Post the results after you try it.

I was thinking of 11 and it told me I was thinking of 7. How craptacular.

It's not a flash thing, and it's really weird. It absolutely nailed the first two for me, and on the third, I thought pink hammer, and it guessed red hammer. Anyone know what psychological principles are at work here?

Amazing it wasn't one of those things, anyhow i've seen something similar before and it got me again even though i was trying to think of other things.

I would think that because you are supposed to be answering math problems quickly, when you see "pick between 12 and 5" your brain just automatically does a math problem as "12-5=7". That can be the only logical reason it's "between 12 and 5" and not the other way around.

That makes sense. However, that still doesn't explain why adding a bunch of numbers to 6 makes me think of a carrot, or why the number 3 leads to red/pink hammers.

Bah, it whiffed on all 3. I said 6, broccoli and blue screwdriver.

Actually, it *is* sort of neat. I did the next two tests and I thought of the things that it said I was going to think of.

On a related note, my sister got a little handheld "20 questions" game for Christmas. Now *this* was cool. It managed to guess what I was thinking of about 90% of the time. There was a bunch of times where I thought it was totally going down the wrong path with its questions, but still managed to guess what I was thinking of by the end.

The carrot works because 6 letters in carrot - just like the sum of the numbers. You store things in your brain by word length - 6 gets you to the right place.

Same for 3 and red. Not sure about the hammer part - 3*2?

The 12 and 5 didn't work for me.

Re: Almost scary mind reading game....try it

I think its more or less the most popular of each question. Carrot is the first vegtable I think of whenever. The hammer I have at home has a red handle. 7 is one of the most popular numbers for anyone.

Re: Almost scary mind reading game....try it

it worked on the first one, but the connection is obvious. it didn't work for me on the last two, but i don't see why people would be inclined to get red hammer or carrot anyway.

Yeah, I'd seen the online one awhile ago. The handheld one seems neater for some reason, though.

So I read this and remember playing that 20 questions things online some time ago. I googled it and played a round. Upon finishing, I read:

Uncommon Knowledge about a laxative
Do you carry it in your pocket? I say Probably.
Would you like to be one? I say Yes.

I'm through with this game, and glad it didn't read my mind.

i read in an article, i believe it was esquire, that if you force someone to think of a number between one and ten quickly, a distinct majority will say 7.

the article was about the best guys in the world at hitting on chicks.

Interesting game here. For the first puzzle, I thought of 6 and not 7, although I was semi-distracted while doing it. For the second one, I did, in fact, think of a carrot (not distracted this time). For the last one, I thought of a blue axe. I don't know why everyone thought of a hammer. Strange.

A majority? Or a plurality? Seems to me it would be very unlikely for over 50% of a sample group to answer 7. But I have no idea what article you're talking about, I'm just using some common sense.

Every time I go through this, their answers don't line up with mine around 5 or 6 times, therefore it keeps missing.

Re: Almost scary mind reading game....try it

- 7
- Carrot
- Red hammer

Doh! how predictable am I?... no wonder I'm a fish at p*ker.

The psychological explanation is that categories are represented as stereotypes in our brains. When you think of the category "bird" you don't visualise a penguin... this is basically it; Carrot is a common stereotype for vegetable and red hammer is a common stereotype for tools. Which stereotype will represent each group depends agmonst others on culture and age of aquisition.
