Rake
 

I'm moving to New Zealand for a year in two weeks, and there's a new tiny poker room in Auckland. I emailed the floor manager about the rake, and this is the response I got:

"At the Poker Zone we offer a $2/$4 (big blind $2) structured game with a $30 minimum buy-in and take a $1 Hand fee per hand. Our medium structured game is a $5/$10 (small blind $2) with a $60 buy-in and we take a 10% rake with a cap. Our higher limit game is a $10/$25 game with a 5% rake and cap. Currently we do not offer any no-limit
games."

I have absolutely no experience in B&M play, so I don't really know if this is acceptable or not. It seems a tad high to me, but maybe it's perfectly normal?

How much should I tip? A dollar in each pot I win?

the $1 per hand rake seems reasonable. for comparison, at foxwoods the rake on the 2/4 game is 10% up to $4 max.

the other games seem reasonable too but i guess we'd have to know what the cap is

I seem to remember this coming up before, and I think that the $1 hand fee for this particular casino means "$1 every time you want cards dealt to you" not "$1 per pot".

Basically, it's horrible.

I seem to remember this coming up before, and I think that the $1 hand fee for this particular casino means "$1 every time you want cards dealt to you" not "$1 per pot".

So it's more like, "That'll be a dollar for that 7-2 I just dealt you. Thank you, sir." If so, it's beyond horrible.

You are correct. It's $1/hand/player.

There was some joint in the midwest doing that plus $3 or $4 max rake on the game. Why anyone would play is beyond me.

I played at Bellagio this past weekend with an Aussie guy, and he told me that's how it is in Australia. Pretty draconian, and probably an unbeatable structure.

If you can't play the $10/25, don't go. IIRC (from the post, I don't go near the Island of Sheepf*cking) the cap at 5/10 was absurd, something like 10. And that $1/hand/player thing is the worst rake I've ever heard of in a cardroom. It's unbeatable.

Tip $1, just like you would anywhere else.

I'm prolly going to start out with $5/$10. $10/$25 is a little hefty for my current bankroll, since a lot of it went into the trip itself. I'm not even considering the $2/$4 robbery game.
